AMD (NASDAQ: AMD) today announced that it has received approval from all necessary authorities to proceed with the acquisition of Xilinx, Inc. (NASDAQ: XLNX). With the exception of the remaining customary closing conditions, all conditions to the transaction closing have been satisfied and the company expects the transaction to close on or about February 14, 2022.

AMD announced its intention to acquire Xilinx in an all-stock transaction on October 27, 2020. The transaction brings together two industry leaders with complementary product portfolios and customers, combining CPUs, GPUs, FPGAs, Adaptive SoCs and deep software expertise to enable leadership computing platforms for cloud, edge and intelligent end devices.

If Lisa has the feminine-version of balls, she'll wear a leather jacket in the next press conference.

Man, that would be hilarious stuff. "Hi, uncle!"

And should probably consider cutting one arm off that jacket too :D

Could be some amazing ryzens in the future with this. I think I read somewhere that the plan was to use part of the chip as fpga to run old/outdated instructions that take a lot of die space. Moar cores!

That would just take more die space for the same thing though. What good would reprogramability of the chip section do there?

So back where they started before they started bleeding after the ATI acquisition and phenomenal failures.

Good work AMD.

The company logos look like they were made by the same designer in the same state of mind, it won't be hard to combine them into one.

Download the microcode for each old instruction, every time, from xilinx.amd.com, so developers learn not to use them?

I think AMD need xilinx cause in the Desktop Market they have below 200€ zero, nothing against any CPU since Comet Lake.

They could do the same Apple is doing, FPGA will work wonders for a lot of tasks where x86 simply would be too unnecessary or power consuming.

Sure. But that isn't what the deal is about.

Apple has control of the entire stack though. AMD has to run on software not specifically designed for their hardware.

Xilinx's acquisition has nothing to do with budget cpus. It's about the Data Center (SmartNICs, computational storage, silicon photonics), autonomous driving, telecommunications (5G).
If you're interested in what they do... https://www.xilinx.com/products/silicon-devices/fpga/what-is-an-fpga.html

Xilinx bought Solarflare, and continue to make NICs.
Ok, I just learned something. Cool.

You'll lose more going FPGA than you ever could gain back with another ISA.

Depends on the task, these'd do well in servers & "eventually" general consumer market if AMD can build a good software base for them. There's no free lunch & as Nvidia, with CUDA, or Apple have demonstrated software goes a long way into making the best use of your (own) hardware.

Big money is in Data Center and Notebooks, not Desktop.

Btw, i think you might be on the wrong website. Maybe you were looking for wccftech?

What is Apple doing that's related to FPGAs?

It's the IP for deformable co processor's, that could get interesting pretty quickly.
Intel has they're FPGA subsidiary too.
