Today at its What's Next event, Western Digital Corp. announced two new additions to its growing WD_BLACK gaming portfolio, the WD_BLACK SN850X NVMe SSD and WD_BLACK P40 Game Drive SSD. Designed to elevate the gaming experience, the expanded portfolio offers players more options to upgrade their PC or console storage. "AMD is delighted with its continued collaboration with Western Digital to deliver exceptional gaming experiences," said Joe Macri, Compute and Graphics CTO and Corporate Fellow at AMD. "As games become more immersive, the expectation for fast, seamless gameplay increases. AMD strives to remove latency between the system, memory and connected devices like Western Digital's SSD gaming solutions with the adoption of the latest PCIe technologies and memory and latency optimizations within AMD CPUs and GPUs. Our combined solutions enable richer visuals, faster load times and more consistent gameplay."

"We're inspired by the unique ways in which players experience their games and are committed to working with the best technology partners, like AMD, to develop solutions that help them break barriers," said Rob Soderbery, executive vice president and GM, Flash Business Unit, Western Digital. "Our diverse WD_BLACK portfolio ensures that gamers are equipped to conquer today's games and prepared for what's next."

The SN850 was $229.95 when it launched at 1 TB, this is $189.99, so I think your logic is flawed here.

He could be right on the money and I have two of these drives. The SN850 sells for $149.99 on Amazon (US) as of May 9th 2022. The read speeds are 300mb/s faster? They haven't advertised the write speeds, so if its still around the 5,300 mb/s area, it won't be worth the premium over the vanilla version. I will reserve my final judgement until I see this bad boy tested. It just might have some secret sauce under that heatsink. Shhiiiddd, it might even have negative latency like the Google Stadia.

Right now Mindfactory has the samsung 980 pro 1TB at 119€, how much faster the SN850X must be to justify its price?

Perhaps, but I will wait to see prices in stores here. For some reason whenever something gets the 'gaming' tag it's 15% to 150% more money.

Can proof be found that PCIe 4.0 storage is quicker than 3.0 storage for games?
Last time I checked they are equal if out by minuscule margins of error that an end user will never notice.
My old SN750 & Corsair MP510 serve me well still....

I wish my SN850's could have babies.

I'm sure a PCIe 4 M2 would be faster than a PCIe 3 m2 wouldn't it? Is a SN750 as fast as a SN850?

at sequential read and write, gen 4 drives blast away at upto double the speeds.

For anything else, nothing changes without new controllers or new flash memory (or tweaked firmwares, for smaller changes) - load times, 4K random etc are all gunna be the same without new hardware behind it all

Sssssssh... It's marketing speak for "it's the same as every other similar product, but we had to come up with something to put in the press release."

Marketing!

The gaming mode on the SN850 disables the power saving, making it produce more heat but removing potential causes for latency. They've likely done similar here, so you can disable the power saving on the drive and slap it into a PS5 for ze ultimate 24FPS experiunce

Depends on the game engine largely, TPU reviewed one model here boasting of "Super load game times" in the title of that review earlier this year.
But in reality it's highly dependent on game engine optimization.
