Though relabeling packages isn't too uncommon. I remember RX 480 4GB for example, they used the same ones as 8GB versions, just a 4GB sticker over it.

Sure.

It's probably the decision of the individual manufacturer and what sort of impression they'd like to convey. I certainly understand the practicality of using a sticker on a box/bag to denote a difference in the product inside, and not just PC hardware.

However, this would likely be a full model number change.

Maybe they should slap a "4090" sticker on the box and charge accordingly.

;)

They could also relaunch the 4080 16gb as 4080 ti.

They could also relaunch the 4080 16gb as 4080 ti.

But they decided not to. And that wouldn't change the large gap between it and the 4090.

Clearly there is a place for a "4080 Ti" card with 100 SMs, 12000 CUDA cores, 20GB VRAM on a 320-bit memory bus, ~400W TDP, at a price point of $1400.

And from a marketing standpoint, it makes more sense for them to launch something with a plain model number (3080, 3090, 4080, 4090) versus a variant with a suffix. Otherwise they will spend six months fielding the question, "Where's the regular 4080?"

Well, it's official: the 3080 to 4080 has an MSRP increase of 71%.

It depends on AMD if this nvidia pricing will survive.
A potential RX 7900 XT at ~800, 900 or 1000 msrp will drop the RTX 4080 price.

If we are lucky, AMD can launch a cut-down Navi 31 as 7800 XT for 600 or 700 msrp.

If people gobble up these 4080s like they did 3080s, the 5080 will cost $1699+. Nvidia will keep jacking up the prices until the market will bear it no more.

So am I to understand that buyers are getting SKU sku ska-roo'ed? I think Nvidia is just trying to muddy the waters to make it more difficult to compare price vs. performance with previous card generations.

People gobbled up scalped Ampere and RNDA2 cards during the Great GPU Shortage. And now they're buying up scalped 4090 cards.

The marketplace has been sending a very clear message to AMD, NVIDIA and their AIB partners for the past few years.

I think they realised there's very high demand for the 4090
Joke incoming ....

Yup, both power consumption and on your wallet xD

Jokes aside, good that they realized that they dont have to flood the market with SKU naming.

Now to know who is the most dumb, the consumer who will buy those new generation cards (4080 & 4090) eating so much power for such a high price or them (nVidumb) for the attempt to use the same name for 2 cards with clearly different specs...

But if AMD have great products, why won't they be scalped too? Stock gone, MSRP's meaningless, tears flow... nothing changes.

Between the 4080 (16GB) and the 4090 is not only a place for a "4080ti", there is a performance gap for a truck load of faster models. :kookoo: 4090 is up to ~93% faster than a 4080(16GB)!
I get that the "fake" 4080 is now the hanger and I am glad it's finally beeing adressed, but the 16GB version is a scam, too. Barely faster than a 3090ti in rasterization (ignoring the fake DLSS FPS).

To me it looks like the marketing division decided to slap "4080" on everything, because folks associate "4080" = top model = fast = expensive.
And with the gap between the 4080 and the 4090 there is a lot of air to release every 6 month a new faster 4080. It's all about justifying high prices & increasing profits.

I just call it: Q3/23 = 4080ti, Q1/24 = 4080Super, Q3/24 = 4080Ultra :cool:

AMD needs to make their drivers more stable, tried a RX 580, had drivers issues even when surfing it was BSODing. Passed to a RTX2070, never looked back since.

I don't know if they improved drastically with time, tbh I am looking seriously at RDNA3 too in addition to the 4080 for my next upgrade...but if picking a GPU with the most stable drivers is gullible, then I am gullible. Nothing instinctive with picking up Nvidia...had 2 AMD GPU a ATI 4870 and an RX 580, both were drivers hell, at one point you get tired of DDU, troubleshooting, etc.

I've had many driver issues with Nvidia over the years.

* Broken video playback in multiple formats; while playing games or streaming/playing videos
* 2nd monitor never waking up from sleep. Only resolution was a system reboot.
* Green pixilated shadows
* crash to desktop
* BSOD
* games not launching
* games that ran just fine before, but now run like crap
* one annoying issue I had for a while was lights shining through other objects. Examples would be the sun, as it would pass behind a mountain (or a building), the sun would shine right through it. Torches or street lights would shine through walls and so on. This issue actually plagued me over a handful of driver versions.

Those are just the ones that I still remember, I'm sure there are more. No side is perfect and to keep on telling people that AMD drivers are unstable, that just means you've been lucky enough to not have to deal with bad Nvidia drivers. Also, not all drivers work with all hardware/software configurations. I've learned some time ago that if I find a driver that works, I stick with it and I don't update my driver unless I absolutely have to (new generation of a GPU or a new game that requires the most recent driver to run).

I must be missing something here. The cheapest 3090 Ti I can find in the US is going for $1450 atm yet loses out to the $1200 4080 16GB in gaming .. that's with DLSS turned off.

I saw yesterday the below NewEgg offer for AMP Extreme Holo, it's still valid (still +$100 vs before 1 week for the cheapest 3090Ti model)

This only happened because they judged they couldn't get away with what they were trying to pull. If you want nVidia to treat you better, stop blindly giving them your money.
