AMD socket 939

Hi guys
I want your opinion on about upgrading my CPU
Currently I have
Asus A8N-SLI Premium MB
3700+ San Diego Core @ 10 x 278mhz
Any recommendation on a cpu?
btw I do not want to upgrade my motherboard and everything else simply because i don't have the money.

What i don't get is why is the AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ Socket 939 cheaper then the AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ Socket 939?

its hard to say your running 2.7gh wich is pritty good

i got an opty 180 2.4gh dule core to replace my single core 4000+


only thing that sucks is this dule core has ishews hitting 2.9gh in the bios

as where i got to 3.3gh into windows on my 4000+ [but its only faster then the opty in like raw cpu mh related programs]

in black an white 2 the dule core evin at 2.6gh pulles way ahead of the 4000+ @3.3gh

so it was worth it to me but i was hopeing to hit 3gh evin with my dule core

i paid about 220can for my opty 180 had to order it on line

an i might buy a opty 165 just for fun cus if hered of good number of thows hitting 3gh

on less power then it takes for my 180 to hold 2.8gh [the 165 is about 119can] retail box

Opty 180 ftw.
X2's are not as good at ocing as they are not as stable asw the optys.
FX series are just too expensive.

If I knew the Opty was more stable, I would have bought it instead of my 4800+ x2 which still does well.

i would go with a good stepping x2 3800 ive got mine at 2.93 and a lot of people have,if you get the the right core and stepping, mine of ebay new is £50 with is like $80

What stepping is your CPU regan?
I know CCBWE stepping is crap as I've been reading and have found out they have trouble keeping stable even at 2.64Ghz.
My CPU is that stepping.

Pretty much all of my hardware is not verygood at overclocking anyway.
Except for my card only if it has a better cooler.

Even though my rig does the job fine.

Go for a dual-core 4200+. Your watercooling setup should be able to hit at least 2.6GHz on this chip.

I went from a 4000+ to an fx60 which is the only real move to make with a decent 939 motherboard (if you can find one) & no need to change your 400mhz ram'

or just buy a c2d & motherboard & ram for about the same price.good luck.

Because the 4400+ has 2x1MB instead of 2x512KB and was discontinued before the 4600+ was.

well about the opty 180..... its just expensive, i still wanna buy all sort of other things such as a car and a hdd. So forget the fx60 and about the decent motherboard I think my mb is one of the top of 939. I think i'll look around a bit more and thanks newtekie1, didnt realized that the cache was different, i think that would make a massive differences.

as you can see its E6 which are known as high overclockers, but also very very cheap these days thanks to am2!! check out ebay they sell a lot there, i got mine new

Just curious did you manage to break the 3ghz barrier?
and do you know what kind of cooling did you use?

I have trouble getting mine stable after 2.6Ghz

i went for an opty 185, my fist one was a great stepping and easily bounced over the 3ghz mark, thenit randomly fried and i got it RMA'd, and tadaa! crappy stepping ahoy. now it barely reaches 3ghz. just depends on your stepping. my previous sandy 4000+ was a killer, soared over 3ghz without batting an eyelash.

Yeah thought so.
Well I got a crappy stepping.
I knew it didn't come down to just the JH-E6 you see in CPU-Z.
It also comes down to the stepping written on the CPU.

yeh i get mine to 3.1 stable with 8hours of testing and it needa 1.56v for that so i have it at 2.93 and it only need 1.5v and its a little hot in my room atm im happy with that but ghz only need 1.55v

have a look of ebay and the ones that advertise good steppings and sell them as new look at there feedback and see what people have said

i think the 3800 is a good way of saving money as even now a 3800 939 at 3.1ghz isnt far off a 6000 am2!which costs car more but ok does run cooler

ps my cooler is in my specs its nothing special just better then a stock

Doesn't help my ram isn't the best at overclocking either.
Will be getting a Scythe Infinity as my CPU gets to about 51 deg stock with this Heatsink.
Which is normal.

somthine like this , they tell you the stepping and everything,just check out google and see what people have got, and if you want to spend a little more try and get a higher cpu as in 4600 with a good stepping that way you want have to go as hight on your fsb as i dont know what the limit is on your mobo

If you have a socket 939 motherboard, even mentioning a socket AM2 chip is redundant.

They are completely different chips. One cannot replace the other.
Either your motherboard manual or the spec's on the AMD website will tell you what the fastest CPU chip your mobo will take. Look it up!

Then get the fastest one you can afford.

The Dual Core Toledo 939's are nice

I've got a 3800+ Toledo X2 64 bit, it's about 2.4GHz stock. (on Asus A8V-VM SE, and 1GB DDR400)
