Did I just screw up with the 7900XTX - multi monitor supported?!

Has anyone actually read the tech specs on the display outputs on these cards? I just tried for the cards that the OP says are owned and I haven't been able to find a technical manual, only a quick setup one. The Powercolor one said something about only being able to drive two DisplayPort 2.1 signals, but wasn't very clear on anything beyond that. The Asrock site says nothing about any limits with it. I checked AMD's site, once again, says nothing about limits. So I have absolutely no idea what's going on. Either something is wrong or the industry isn't be forthcoming on what display output configurations are valid for these cards. To be honest, at this price point, that's rather disappointing. Actually regardless of price point, I'd want this information.

That's exactly what I said the first time you posted to check that info. There's absolutely nothing. I even have an open ticket with amd and emails from their tech support telling me to return the card for a replacement. When I told them I have 2 and they both do it, I'm guessing the tier 1 support tech escalated it and I'm waiting to hear back now. Not sure if it's a compatability, configuration or driver issue. But there's no definitive answer from any source of authority on the matter at the moment.

No but it's reasonable for you to try some simple things to get it working, it's rather simple to run windows from any spare SSD or hard drive for testing, or bootable linux from a USB drive and see how things work

There's always alternatives, but a bad attitude and refusal to try anything won't solve problems

Trying another OS is a valid step because people run all sorts of dumb tweaks and fixes to their OS that it doesnt need and it breaks things, I dont even recommend people use driver cleaners as they're a last resort not the first one - they CAUSE problems more than they fix them, yet stubborn people never learn and run in a damn loop.
I've got two different AMD drivers and an Nvidia driver in my VR PC as i swap GPUs in and out of it, and it's got zero issues - yet people tell you to run driver cleaner for swapping a monitor

The 7900XTX has three displayports (One with a USB-C connector) and one HDMI 2.1
At least 3 of the four should work together at any given time, but you'd need to try one monitor at a time with one cable and find out what's going on.
No one else is going to have your exact monitor setup, so spend that time and try that HDMI Cable and get it working on a single display, and then add DP monitors one at time until an issue occurs and proceed from there
Pure laziness, didn't even offer the obvious alternative solutions, blanket 'reinstall windows' suggestion.

My suggestion is to first go to device manager, locate gpu, uninstall it. If the previous nvidia gpu is on there uninstall/remove it too. Then reinstall drivers from scratch. It worked for me on many cards and I have 1 amd and 2 nvidia gpus with both drivers in my system and it actually works.

My other suggestion is that if you have your previous card still, go multi-gpu for the time being and run the last monitor off the nvidia gpu (turn pcie slot #2 to x4 to conserve lane bandwidth).

Even better is to use devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices and put it in the Registry...

Used both drivers that are available as of today.

DP1 - Monitor (2560*1440)
DP2 - 3x1080p in linked config (DP link :) for simrig )
HDMI - VR

The reason why I switched to AMD is more than 4 displays, today it failed....
Hope they will fix it................

Weekend and time for some extra troubleshooting.
After some info on the Dutch Tweakers.net forum I started some extra troubleshooting.

DP1 - monitor ON (main monitor)
DP2 - everything turned off
HDMI - VR and WMR/SteamVR active (Samsung O + )

Turned on DP2 monitor 1 = image
Turned on DP2 monitor 1+2 = image
Turned on DP2 monitor 1+2+3 = image on 1 and 2, not on 3.

Tried to turn on monitor 3, but Windows10 gave an error message about activating the screen.
So the screen IS detected!

Tried some other configurations, but 4 active screens was the max.

After my troubleshooting I also tried RF2 in VR as a lot of people are complaining about VR.
At 100% SS it was great!
Drove a couple of laps around Mt Panorama in the Ferrari 488 GT3 : Great!

I already tried this step and posted results above. Spent plenty of time testing with this last night, the results were the same every time;

HDMI only, works fine. correct resolution and refresh rate.
Plug in 2nd monitor via DP - both work fine, correct resolution and refresh rate. Does not matter which monitor I use 2nd.
Plug in 3rd monitor via DP - HDMI monitor disabled. Does not show in device manager, not via show hidden, not via windows detect displays--nothing. It's like the HDMI port just fucks off and goes home.

The USB-C to DP cable arrived this AM and I swapped to that, it all works.

The HDMI cable is a known good I took from my home theater system, displaying a 75" 4k smart tv with ARC, running the latest HDMI standard.

This card just does not handle HDMI as a third monitor it seems.
I have a similar issue. Two monitors, one dp and one hdmi, and a 7900 xtx. When booting with both monitors plugged in, neither will detect any signal, but having only one monitor connected I can get either one to work. Haven't really found a fix other than booting with just one monitor, then plugging the other in later, pretty dumb issue tbh.

Hello !
I am about to buy an XFX Speedster MERC310 7900XTX.
I really concerned about the multi monitor issue.
I have 2 Display port 4k 60hz monitor and 1 HDMI Oled 4k 55" screen.
Everything works fine on my GTX 1080 from 2017 that I want to upgrade.

Is someone can tell me if this issue is fixed on the 7900 XTX graphic card ?
Thank you very much

I have heard of this alot more on AMD cards recently on reference models. It seems to be (from what I have seen/read) that the way these cards support 3 monitors is only with using a combination of 2 of the DP or HDMI and a DP and the type C port. You cant use 2 DP's and an HDMI for 3 monitors unfortunately. I don't know why but it seems to be that way if you want more than 2 monitors hooked to the card. I guess it has to do with VR?

I could be wrong but this is what I have seen with 6900 and 7900 series reference cards.

There is no issue, amd supports more monitors at a higher resolution than the 4090. Here is 3 screens working simultaneously in game at 230 hz on the 7900xtx, the 4090 could only do 144 hz and no dsc

I’m not saying they don’t support it, I am saying that based off of what I have heard and seen it seems the ‘reference’ models with the type C port seem to only support a third monitor if it is hooked into the type C port (meaning a combination of the 4 ports that includes at least 1 type C port).

I maybe wrong, but I have seen multiple people talking about this and it seems to be only on the reference models which seem to be the only ones with a type C port. Not sure if this is because the 2 DPs and HDMI are linked with only 2 lanes available and the type C is outside the loop, or if it’s software limited for some reason. I also could be wrong and the cards in question I have seen have an old bios or have an internal issue.

What a mess. Reminds me of the days you needed a Matrox TH2G to drive 3 monitors.

This sounds nothing like the eyefinity technology I knew of, where six displays were supported.
As far as I know, the eyefinity technology depends on the usage of display port outputs.

Now isn't HDMI originally designed for home theaters and therefore single display?
Then it makes sense for a multidisplay setup to look for a card with as many displayports that one can find.
And then drive a HDMI display with an active DP to HDMI adapter, if needed.

EDIT:
The wikipedia pages about eyefinity and displayport mention the displayport 1.2 capabilty to drive multiple monitors on one dp output , called MST , Multi Stream Transport.
You could in fact use a hub to split up the streams or theoretically daisy chain capable displays.

Also:
"MST is supported by USB Type-C DisplayPort Alternate Mode, so standard DisplayPort daisy-chains and MST hubs do function from Type-C sources with a simple Type-C to DisplayPort adapter."
So USB Type-C is a good and easy solution if you need to drive an extra display.

It is possible, but one needs to do some research in advance for specific setups.
Does the AMD Eyefinity app for configuring multdisplay setups still come with the newer cards?
I would just avoid using HDMI in multidisplay setups.

It seems none of the newer nvidia cards come with a USB Type-C output.
It would be nice to have 4 displays driven from cards with 3 DP + 1 USB Type-C output simultaniously with no extra hardware, just with standard cables, The RTX 2080 regular and Ti had these outputs.

What are your software versions? Windows 10?
What driver version?
What monitors and refresh rates?

We need all the details you can provide.
Maybe try to install a fresh Windows from another version. If you have 10, then install 11. If you have 11, then install now 10.
Try with another driver version.

Yeah, right :)

Stats for Jan 2023:

Too many older and not so old PCs/laptops are unsupported by Windows 11, so unless you "jump through hoops" for now many users simply do not have a choice and are stuck on Windows 10 anyway.
I used a workaround to upgrade to Windows 11 myself, on more than one of my computers (not all yet), but this is not always ideal.
