Following a sudden price war between retailers to offer the lowest price HD DVD player (which Best Buy is currently winning at $180) Wal-Mart has gone one better than the competition to offer the Toshiba HD-A2 at just $98.87 this Friday as part of its 'Secret In-Store Specials'. However, you might want to get to Wal-Mart early (the offer starts at 8:00 a.m.) if you're interested, because the company does comment that this deal is only available while stocks last and it will not be offering the discount in all stores. Wal-Mart's regular price for the HD DVD player is currently $198, so this is a saving of almost $100.

Update: here is a link to the Wal-Mart page pictured above, you should be able to check if your local store will be offering this promotion by clicking on the HD DVD player's picture.

Why can't they have drives like this for that kind of price? HD-DVD Burners have to eventually decrease in price as well.. it's just taking forver, and Wall Mart is selling the cheapest stuff for more than the cheapest price until then..

Holy crap...I'm heading to Wal-Mart on Friday!

Hope your store has it - is Brits don't get great offers like this :(

Anyway, I've updated the post with a link to the Wal-Mart listing the HD DVD player, and I think you can check if your store will have it using that.

"Only while stocks last?" Oh, as if -- they're Wal-Mart. They probably have stockrooms rivaling that big one at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark

Holy but-face batman Im getting up at 5:30 A.M. tomorrow to get this, even though I dont have an HDTV yet (I still plan to get one before the end of the year still though):laugh:

From some of the forums comments on other websites it certainly looks like alot of people who were on the fence as to which HD format to choose from arent letting this deal pass them up. HD-DVD may have just received an especially pleasent Christmas present from Wal-Mart. Cheers to Wal-Mart I have always hearted you:toast::toast::pimp::);) Screw Target, Wal-Mart has always been better and WILL always be better.

Also Best Buy has already gone on the record and responded from this: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...CategoryId=pcmcat80500050007&id=1158323325814

But from the looks of things they are already sold out online at least.:roll::roll:

OH and also cant wait to pick up Gods & Generals either:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000QFW5QG/?tag=tec06d-20
This is a good sign for HD-DVD.

And also mdm-adph while they may usually have tons of stuff stocked in the backrooms if you just stroll around the stores, especially the food sections, you will notice that there are huge holes in various area that have not been filled up yet, whether this is to make people want to buy more food or if it is just a lack of supply I have no Idea, but the point is not everything is always able to be kept in stock for varying reasons some decided by Wal-Mart others by Supply trucks:roll::roll:

Woosh, I think I might get this while on my way into work. Even if I never buy a HD DVD movie <G>

and 720p is plenty for HD content. 720p looks absolutely amazing. Of course, 1080p looks a little better, but unless your a true videophile, youll be ok with 720p.

What about the Acer Laptop for $350? I thought Acers are pretty good.
My wife needs a laptop for cheap. She just surfs the web and does word processing. Maybe solitar or minesweeper.

I'm glad to see these prices fall so hugely, at this rate Blu-Ray will be under-cut out of the war, and since Blu-Ray drives are considerably more expensive to make than HD-DVD ones I don't think Blu will hit this cheap for some time.

Either Sony will lose a lot of money to stay in the battle for the next generation disk media or will they will stick to that prestige brand angle they seemingly adopt with everything they have their names associated with and allow the Hd-dvd lobby the full run of the green, either way the winner is the consumer in this battle. If there was only one format vying for the next gen format i bet we wouldnt see prices this low so soon after the initial release.

this hd-dvd player does not come with a 1080p output so if your looking for a dvd player that upscales your dvds to 1080i then your good but for true HD (1080p) your S.O.L.

http://reviews.cnet.com/video-playe...d-a2/4505-6463_7-32074340.html?tag=prod.txt.1

not worth it in my opinion

Even if you have a 1080i it's still going to look awesome. Just another Blu-Gay lover still thinking the "player" has to be 1080p. Did you know that your 1080p TV will upconvert this player's 30Hz 1080 output and you won't even be able to tell the difference since the human eye can't distinguish above about 22 Hz (I'm not talking about PC videocard rendering)?

You would rather pay $500 for a Blu-Ray player or PS3 and let it handle the 60 Hz 1080p than your $1000+ HDTV do the same thing and probably better? It's all about the upconverting chips. Granted, this player doesn't have the best in it but this HD-DVD will blow you away.

If you get it, buy Transformers. It is awesome quality and uses the MPEG-4 H.264 CODEC. You will not be disappointed.

Don't believe Sony's propaganda!

At that price (68,5€), I'd buy 2 and the 1 would cover the cost of the one left for me. Propably even buying 3 and selling 1 would get the 2 for free. In fact it would, as 279€ or 400$ is the cheapest you can get one here..

edit: those who do get one, don't buy aything else, I mean absolutely nothing (well maybe one or two HD-DVD movies :p). They are obviously not making any profit on those, but once they get you the customer to the store, it has worked as a great advertising. Even better when you end up in a store that hasn't got them you think "well might as well buy something else on sale". :)

I got a player and the laptop. They sold out of both and were only selling 1 per customer. At 1080i it is very pretty, I compared Batman Begins and it is so much clearer. 1080p must be the shit but I can't afford a 1080p screen or 1080p player right now. It plays all my Backups of DVD+R and DVD+R DL.

I don't know about the laptop I may take it back if it is too slow, I haven't opened it but I assume it has a Celeron M.
