I use WASD for fps with ctrl as crouch, thumb on space bar for jump, q for melee, r for reload, right mb for grenade, e for use, and mb scroll-click for secondary fire.
Anything else I use a gamepad, usually the utterly superior 360 wireless pads...

i use the arrow keys hate wasd.....i want the version of the saitek eclipse with the seperate pad though so my body isnt shifted to the right...but i thought it came with it when i bought mine.

I had that keyboard. It's utter crap. The extra pad is nothing more than macro buttons. It's too large to use as a WASD setup. Also there are many incompatibilites with games that use joysticks.

my biggest irk, though, is when you have to press another button to toggle walk/run, or hold a different button while pressing 'walk' - this will usually prompt me to see what config files are editable and configure a 'run' button that enables 'walk' at a double rate.

anyhow, the mouse layout I use is Lclick - weapon, R-click is either 'use' or 'jump', scroll is weapon-up/weapon-down, scroll-click is 'use-inventory' or 'throw'

typical numpad layout

num/ - run forward
num* - inventory up
num- - inventory down
num7 - lean left
num8 - walk/forward
num9 - lean right
num4 - turn left
num5 - 'special' - i.e. SlowMo in FEAR
num6 - turn right
num1 - strafe left
num2 - backward
num3 - strafe right
num+ - run/walk/sneak toggle, or use object/inventory
numENTER - jump
num. - crouch
num0 - special inventory items, i.e. Flashlight in Doom3

mostly I use what ever default d there is, but left shift HAS to be sprint.

Quake Wars is killing me on scroll for weapons as some will have a zoom mode.....it throws me off.

Bah, I hear you...most of the games I play don't have sprint, so I completely forgot about that.

Even the most skilled typist does not use their pinky to type. My third finger is resting on the A key at all times. Which is exactly where it would be for gaming.

Not true- both my mother and 3 of my friends use their little fingers to type.

Same here. Although it usually rests on the side of my keyboard, I sometimes use it for typing and gaming. It's always in use when I run backwards, shooting at those damn things that come out of monster closets.

I essentially just use three fingers and a tumb for typing, though often just two. It doesn't slow me down, I type as fast as I think up the words in my head - I just don't think there is suitable dexterity in certain fingers (ring finger and little finger) for typing, and I don't use the middle finger on my right hand for anything except commas either...

I don't use my pinkys to type either most of the time, my left pinky almost always rests on the shift button. I never liked using my pinky in my typing classes, it just seemed cumbersome.

i prefer ASDX x is backward s is forward then the strafes. if i need it i set shift to crouch or an odd extra mouse button. jump is space still. works great.

Doom, Wolf3d (modded), 7th Corridor (modded for mouse), Triad (moded for mouse), all before Duke3d.

Old school dukers came from TEN, where joysticks were very common amongst the original D.O.R.K. players, and legends like JERMS. When TEN shutdown and Duke was more popular on Kali, the 'new schoolers' eventually showed up, and took the place by storm with their mouse usage. Though even the greatest player ever (three time world champion) DORK~Hollywood used a MS sidewinder in all his years of playing. Speaking of Hollywood, you might actually be closer to him than you think ;wink;
