RV635 Confirmed; More Details Surface

When AMD released the HD 3800 series of graphics cards, most people were expecting some lower end parts for those who could not afford the $170-$230 it would cost to get an HD 3800 on Newegg. AMD's response to this is the RV635 and RV620. As stated previously there will be an RV635 XT and an RV635 PRO. The RV635 XT will be officially named the HD 3670, and the RV635 PRO will be officially named the HD 3650. Much like the current HD 2600 series, the HD 3600 series will have 24 stream processors, 120 stream processing units, 16 Texture Address Units, 8 Texture Filter Units, 4 ROPs and a 128-bit memory interface. The current revision, A11, shows that the HD 3670 will run at clocks of 800MHz core and 1.6GHz memory. The HD 3650 will have core/memory clocks of 600/1000MHz, respectively. You can expect these cards to be sampled in December, and released in January, or early February at the latest. The main thing separating the HD 3600 series from the HD 2600 series is CrossFire X support, as well as all the main perks of an HD 3800: Avivo HD, DirectX10.1, UVD, and ATI PowerPlay.

Heh, luckily ain't getting one of these cards. What's the use of giving the current 2600 series a smaller manifacturing process, and the same amount of SP's/general ''power''? I wish they would've made the new 3600 series even a bit faster...

... now it seems like a pretty pointless series of cards, especially if you've got a 2600 series card already.

What they did is add some support for the 3XXX cards that the 2XXX cards were lacking. Of course, ATIs HD 2600 and 2400 series cards had the UVD support, but the 2900 didnt have it.

38xx = high end,

4 ROPs ? Hmmm....will this thing play any DX10 game above 'ultra-low' settings? I doubt. I'm sure AMD also added the brag-value Shader Model 4.1. What's the point when you can't even run a SM 4 game at medium settings (above 30 fps)?

Most people get low end graphics cards. The rest of us are just crazy ATI/AMD are trying to get money where they can.

Most people get standard Dell/Compaq/HP boxes or whatever cheapo preassembled box is available in their geographic region. Most people don't know what a video card is.

"Poeple" who get low end graphics cards are largely in fact OEM shops like Dell, Compaq or HP and in smaller part large retailers like Best Buy, CompUSA, MicroCenter, Fry's or similar (as far as N. America is concerned) Sure, an occasional soccer mom or a soccer dad might buy a surplus GeForce 4 MX4000 for her kids, maybe thinking a video card is a video card, or he/she might do it on a over-the-phone recommendation from whatever underpaid Indian support tech (representing one of the retailers or OEM's listed above), but those cases are a minority. Then there are people on limited budgets for such trinkets or people looking for a low-power option for their media box pc, but even they represent a minority when compared to OEM's and in smaller part retailers.

4 ROPs in this day and age is not enough to run oldie FPS games, much less anything like Crysis or similar.
