Mere weeks after Nintendo launched the Switch 2 to international audiences, the Japanese gaming giant has announced that the original Nintendo Switch will be subject to price increases in Canada. In a press release announcing the price increase, Nintendo of Canada confirms that all original Nintendo Switch consoles, including th OLED and Lite models, physical and digital games, and Switch accessories—as well as the Amiibo and Nintendo Switch Online memberships—will be affected by the price change.

In the announcement, Nintendo blames "market conditions" for the price change and specifies that the Nintendo Switch 2 will not be affected by the price change. According to Eurogamer, the price adjustment may be related to the strained international trade relations between Canada and the United States, and the price change comes after Nintendo briefly delayed the Switch 2's launch in both the US and Canada in response to tariffs imposed by the United States. Nintendo has not announced what the price increase will look like, but it has confirmed that the price increases will take effect on August 1, whereupon Nintendo of Canada will announce the new pricing.

Hiroshi Yamauchi and Satoru Iwata must be rolling in their graves by now. This modern Nintendo has nothing to do with the Nintendo of old. It's a straight up unlikable, anti-fun Nintendo.

This isn't as insane as it seems when you consider TSMC keeps hiking prices even on older nodes. Granted, I don't know if it affects N14 or whatever they call what the X1+ is built on, but it is something to consider.

It is actually insane, it doesn't cost anywhere near $300 to build a switch. Those price hikes are more than offset by the fact the switch paid off it's r+d ages ago.

Reminder: Mario kart 8 deluxe alone has generated over $4 BILLION in revenue for Nintendo, the vast majority from their own storefront, so no middle man. They don't need to raise prices, they CHOOSE to raise prices, because current leadership has a "profit over all else" motive.

That's why they are raising the prices of everything, including digital releases, which are not affected by tariffs. It's pure, unbridled greed.

I wasn't trying to defend those morons (the Switch feels truly soulless compared to the classics, or heck, even the Wii U). All I'm saying is, it may have been necessary to maintain their ludicrous margin.

And what are you going to do about it?

And what are you going to do about it?
Nothing, of course. All we plebs can do is not support the post-Iwata Nintendo and keep playing on PC/buying used consoles.

That means my old one just went up in price even more.. since it is the one with the backdoor.

Well... Happy Canada Day everyone!
Funny timing anouncing this on the eve of our national day, thanks Nintendo, you really shouldn't have.

I believe that the Switch 2 SoC is on Samsung fabs, so shouldn’t be the case.

It’s basically now just like every other game company, only they know for a fact that they have a fully captive audience and so they don’t even have to pretend and can do whatever and, as we can see, still rake in profits. I kind of felt that it would inevitably turn out this way and seemingly was right.

By market conditions I'm assuming they mean buy our new console. I know old node's are getting more expensive but surly Nintendo isn't still making X1 but rather clearing old inventory.

That's what you get for not voting with your wallet
