PC World has made a list of the 15 products, companies, and industries that left the most sour taste for year 2007. This servey lists Microsoft Windows Vista as number 1 disappointment.
Five years in the making and this is the best Microsoft could do?

It's just that Vista isn't all that good. Many of the innovations the operating system was supposed to bring--like more efficient file and communications systems--got tossed overboard as Microsoft struggled to get the OS out the door, some three years after it was first promised. Despite its hefty hardware requirements, Vista is slower than XP.

I knew it.

Malware, survey (mis-spelled) correct it and I'll erase this line.

And when the fastest Vista notebook PC World has ever tested is an Apple MacBook Pro, there's something deeply wrong with the universe.

Pretty accurate list. Also, Terry Semel is a joke. I saw him on Charlie Rose a while back and he was pretty pathetic for a CEO of a major corporation like Yahoo. He kept going: "We gots big things planned, we sure does!" and I couldn't stop laughing. How Yahoo is still in business is anybody's guess.

Oh ya, #1? Pretty obvious pick for #1.

And there I was with a $200 sound card listening to good 'ol stereo playing games on Vista:shadedshu

I'd put AMD too, for losing a bet with my brother that Barcelona would thrash Kentsfield.

#6. Un-Neutral: The Broadband Industry

^ This should have been #2 . I pay you, you promise unlimited bandwidth, I effin use it the way I want, even if it has to be a multi-GB download.

Sadly I don't have such restrictions in India. Just that there's a very high ping when with CS:S or Azureus.

I have zero respect for PC World ever since they released that bogus MBP story regarding it being the "fastest laptop EVER!" A T7700, 4GB of RAM, and an 8600M GT is what they think the fastest notebook is? Idiots.

Wow... AMD on top over Windows Vista? I finally bought a laptop with Vista on it and after a week had to spend several days installing XP and hunting for compatible drivers. Windows Vista is far from being faster then XP. As for AMD... they have done many good things over the same time frame that Micorsoft had been working on Vista. I agree that AMD is struggling to produce the high end CPU and GPU's, but the Radeon 2600, and 38X0 video cards offer awesome bang for the buck. To be honest, the price/performance on almost all the AMD CPU's is just as good of a bargain.

I think that AMD had a brief run of being on the top and now everybody thinks they are crap if they can not get back to that position... but AMD has always been able to offer affordable alternatives to Intel. And that is where their focus is now... why is that a bad thing? Being able to buy a decent dual-core CPU for well under $100 is wonderful! :)

Thats based entirely on if you think its worth the price or not. Thats like saying I think the cost of a Ferrari is a disappointment. If you cant/dont want to afford it, dont buy it. Which is exactly why I dont own #5.

What does this DirectSuond API do?

Allows a multi-channel audio source application to directly interact with the hardware and its hardware accelerated voices, hardware sampling, environmental effects extensions like the A3D and Creative EAX (1~5) by bypassing the HAL and following the app->driver->hardware path rather than the app->driver->HAL->kernel->hardware path

The Windows NT derived OSs like 2000/XP and now Vista have a monolithic "client inside server" kernel. each process acts as a "client" and "connects" to the "server" IE the OS. If the application begins to act erratic, the OS would simply kill it and it wouldn't affect the normal functioning of other processes. In the context of DS, each "client" that sent stacks of audio data would directly go to hardware accelerated sound cards while codecs (AC97 or Azalia) would have a different path where the CPU would do the job of converting raw audio stack to wave data that would then be relayed to the DAC that would send the analog singal to your speakers.

Without DS, all multichannel applications explicitly depending on it to send audio data to a specific hardware channel would fail and the sound would be downmixed by the kernel to stereo. Windows Vista however has an alternate API that the driver can install an ICD (installable client driver) and that's OpenAL I'm talking about. OpenAL as such doesn't have a SIG as yet and is more-or-less Creative's darling. Older games that didn't support OpenAL and would use DS are now stranded. Sure, Creative did a workaround by the ALchemy, which basically is a compatibility layer between a DS app and OpenAL server process, but in many cases it didn't work.

I went and read the article and the author and pans just about everything including the much ballyhooed iPhone. It's also funny how many times Vista has graced the cover of this magazine glorifying how great it is, only 6 months later they spill their beans and pan it. I've always considered PC World to be more of a tabloid mag than a truly informative. TechPower up and other inet sites provide vastly better content.

Also the grammar used in the article was darn near insulting to the readers intelligence (sounds like something I would expect to read in a Jr High Book report) and not from an established publication. The whole thing is trash

Yes, not surprisingly his Quad-Core processor is scoring higher in 3Dmark06 than others with Dual-Cores. That fact that you take pride in that as an AMD fan isn't really helping AMD's position any.

His quad is still getting its ass handed to it by Intel's quads, and he can't get it to even do 3GHz on water.

Id put the PS3 n that list after all there have been no great exclusive games for the PS3 this year and it was greatly over priced for a games console regardless of the blu-ray forcing price cuts.

the list as is focuses on a bunch of menial things while completely ignoring major ones. lol
