I want to OC my AMD 64 X2 4800 (939 pin) and am going to replace the cooler. My budget is $50, though I could push above that value a little...this is a micro mobo in a SFF case, so large tower coolers won't fit.

What would be the best for this appliction?

Processor AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600 2.4Ghz, OC to 2.7Ghz
Motherboard Asus Crosshair
Cooling 4-120mm, 2-80mm fans, CPU-Blue Orb 2
Memory OCZ 2GB DDR2 800Mhz
Video Card(s) Ati 1900XTX, OC to 688/792
Storage Western digital 150Gb 10,000rpm
Display(s) 19" Samsung SyncMaster 940bf
Case Thermaltake Armor
Audio Device(s) Original Audigy
Power Supply Thermaltake TWV 500W
Software Windows XP
I bought the Thermaltake Blue Orb, I've been happy with it, I even pulled some numbers to compare it to stock
At the same time I did some 3DMark06, and CPU Mark 2.1 test to see what my gains were when overclocking.
Video card is a Ati 1900XTX OC to 688/792
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600 2.4Ghz
CPU Fan: Thermaltake Blue Orb II
Room temp. was 23C

Here are some numbers:
Stock CPU/fan@2.4Ghz
Idle: 33C____load: 55C

CPU@2.4Ghz, with Blue Orb Fan
Idle: 31C____load: 44C_____3DMark06: 5808______CPU Mark 2.1: 5261

CPU@2.5Ghz, with Blue Orb Fan
Idle: 31C____load: 45C_____3DMark06: 6067______CPU Mark 2.1: 5277

CPU@2.6Ghz, with Blue Orb Fan
Idle: 31C____load: 46C_____3DMark06: 6121______CPU Mark 2.1: 5330

CPU@2.7Ghz, with Blue Orb Fan
Idle: 33C____load: 49C_____3DMark06: 6165______CPU Mark 2.1: 5388

CPU@2.8Ghz, with Blue Orb Fan
Idle: 34C____load: 56C_____3DMark06: 6222______CPU Mark 2.1: 5452

The Blue Orb did it's job, I took me to OC the CPU to 2.8Ghz to reach the same temperature as the stocker.

Thanks Uncle V...I was thinking about that brand in particular, but with the Red Orb...

Try and avoid this particular stepping if you haven't bought one.
CCBWE 0537 RPMW
05 indicates the year, 37 indicates the week.
According to my research week 37 is a bad week.
I can overclock without too much thought on water but not on air.
There is a thread in the overclocking sction which shows a guy at 2.7Ghz with his using a AC 64 Freezer
Pro.

Here.
This will help you some.

i use the thermaltake silent boost. you can get it at radio shack for 50 bucks. its really quite and seems to work well. i dont take temps. im on an amd s939 x2 3800 oced to 2.6. i can go to about 2.68 stable. crashes because of my crappy value ram.

I'm thinking of getting myself to disregard the temps too.
Something just isn't right when core temp is telling me I'm at 64deg max on one core in Orthos at stock settings with one 80mm intake and a 120mm exhaust.

With the Tuniq Tower 120 LFB getting 57 degrees max on one core in Orthos.
Getting a new motherboard to see if this one is giving incorrect temps in core temp for some reason.

x2

I use one on my am2 4200+ dual core, and it hasn't failed me yet... been using it for over a year now, and it still runs great, its just a bit dirtier now lol.

OC'd right now to 2.5ghz from 2.2 stock, and I keep mid 40's on load in about a 75F environment.

I just purchased a TT Ruby Orb CPU cooler for my X2 4800 939 pin....I had been reading up on TT Blue Orb II and thought it would meet my needs, but decided to try the build with a different color. I made the STUPID assumption that they were basically the same cooler (based on the Blue Orb II claim of 'new type' of heatpipe) but the Ruby Orb has no heatpipes:eek:, just the big fan and aluminum cooler. I also have an Arctic Cooler 64 I can canabalize from another system...

My question is which one of these two coolers will give me the best performance for an OC??
(please give some solid data as to why--what kind of OC obtained using these coolers, not just 'I like this one')

I haven't heard much about the Orb, but I know my Freezer64 let me run 1.5v thru my X2's 24/7.

Are you taking about the freezer or the freezer pro?

get a Zalman cooler, they work great!
and some proper thermalpaste like Arctic Cooling MX-2 or MX-1 :)

I do not have the freezer pro (which is a tower type cooler)...I have the aluminum block with a blue LED 80mm(?) fan blowing down over the cooler.

I agree...I have AC 5 for thermal paste, but did not want to invest too much more in the build as it is an older CPU (I want to buy a good GPU and memory for the OC)...I was going to buy some higher performance DDR and $200-250 video card and call it good.

Only choice atm mate.

I going to do an hour Orthos run and see if my temps have dropped with the fan case mod I have just finished.
