I just want to know if getting SSDs will make enough difference while gaming. The cheapest one I could find was a 32gb on Newegg for $300. I figured 2x those in raid0 would be quite fast, but I wanted to know if the speed would be worth losing the 86gb HD space? I mean if the gains are marginal, then I don't care. a couple of seconds (let's say 3 or less) isn't much to me. I just wish I knew how much faster they were.
They are pretty fast, but not fast enough to warrant the loss in storage, imo.

Does Raid-0 for ssd's increase performance? Cause for HDD's due to moving parts it reduces the time to move but for SSD I am sure it wont effect much.

I don't know, but I still wish I knew how much gain you get from SSDs.

Yeah, it increases by quite a bit. Usually more efficiently than conventional HDDs. But SSDs become more and more bottlenecked in a RAID array if you don't have a good 3rd party controller.

I meant as you add more drives with an ssd setup. lol. It comes to a point of diminishing returns without a high grade controller. But it usually takes a few drives to cause probs.

Still, I'd rather have a couple of normal drives in a RAID0, until the prices of SSD drop a little lower. More bang for the buck.

150gb? 64?

500GB is running low for me.

Then again, i install tons of games, especially the modern (larger) games.

SSD drives will be sweet when the price drops :)

as for never enough space... check my storage system. it doubles in space every 2 years, moores law ftw. i've got about 4TB around the house... mostly full.

lol. I wish I had over 4TB, then maybe I wouldn't have so many damn DVD back-ups. lol

oh i have a sh!tload of DVD backups too. Over time the DVD's would get scratched or wear out, so i figured it was cheaper to just buy hard drives.

I have over 2.5TB of storage between all of my machines and externals. Almost 2 full TB are taken up. lol.

That it, my harddrives are not big by any means but I feel constrained.

6x500GB, 1x320GB

Just about to order my 7th 500GB drive

Currently using 2.5TB of space.

This is all in my Antec 900 :)

I have a single 250GB drive and have barely used about 50gb.

But this system isn't used for anything bar work or games. My media centre PC on the other hand.....:)

an 80gb will suffice. imo, filling the whole thing with 160GB+ worth of games will give you info overload.. finish one single player game at a time. Install 1-2 mmo game for alternatives.. and another genre of a single player game.. consumes about 40GB.. Unistall, then reinstall if nostalgia seeps in.

what about multiplayer and LAN events? i have so many because you cant afford to hunt for disks and wait to install a game when 40+ people are staring at you.

If you have two drives in RAID 0, don't they form one big drive? Like 2x80gb in RAID 0 is 160gb?

I am using a single 120GB drive ATM. I have the full series of Full Metal Alchemist and Cowboy Bebop, Kane and Lynch dead men, Oblivion, Battlefield 2142, and some crappy open source game called Alien Arena. Along with the ~100MB of various programs installed, about 3 gigs for the OS, and a 3GB pagefile, it amounts to 40.7GB. I would say that I have plenty of room for more games whenever one turns up. Really, 2x80GB in RAID 0 should be enough for ANY gamer, if they equal out to 160GB like I am thinking above.

Raid 0 is using both drives to write simultaneously. Increasing speeds and such. So your 2x80g should still be 80g of storage, but nearly double the speeds.

Goes something like this I believe...

Time to read/write
<--------------->
Normal drive
(1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8)
Raid 0 w/2 drives
(1-3-5-7)
(2-4-6-8)
Raid 0 w/3 drives
(1-4-7)
(2-5-8)
(3-6-x)
Raid 0 w/4 drives
(1-5)
(2-6)
(3-7)
(4-8)

I don't burn DVD's much. I havn't for a long time. I just use the Windows IMPAI CD Burning service, works fine. I used to use Nero, but Nero 8 just sucks compared to Nero 7 IMO.
