Question about flashing radeon 9550 to 9600 pro

Has anyone done this with a 256mb version of the 9550? I ask because in the TechPowerUP bios file table there isn't a bios file for a 9600 pro that has 256mb of ram of the same make as the ram on the 9550 card. Is this an issue or is the only important thing the make and speed of the ram?

You could have atleast posted the make of your card and ram.

I can mod a 9600 pro bios for you to work with your ram.

Wow, would you do that for me?! I don't have the card in hand yet. I won it on ebay last night. I'll get back with you soon as I have that info. All I know at this point is that it was produced by Powercolor. When I go to the Powercolor website they only list one card that has 256mb of ram and that part # is: R9550256MB128BIT. I realize that they might put different ram in at different times so that probably doesn't help much.

Techpowerup's bios section doesn't have the information about ram for you'r card but if you tell me which memory it has (Mira 6.0, Samsung 5.0, Samsung 4.0, Infineon 5.0, Hynix 5.0 were the only ones used on 256MB 9550's I think?), it won't be a problem moding a 9600 pro bios with the corect memory timings. But you will also have to try to overclock it (using ATI tool or some other program) to see if it will realy work on 9600 pro speeds (398MHz gpu compared to the 250 that the 9550 is originaly). If it can't reach that speed I will change the pro bios so that the frequency is what you'r card can do.

Thanks. In the bios tables I notice some on the cards had "unknown" for memory type and speed. Is that just because no one provided that info or was it not possible to determine the memory type when looking at the chips?

well i would take the card threw some serious overclocking as there is no point to flashing a card that cant handle it. i had a 9600pro and it ran 400/223 normally. most pros run 400/300 so good luck if u can run those speeds. my friend has a ati 9550 and he cant get it to stay cool at 400/250 so good luck with yrs.

The 9550 came today.

Okay, need help with the video ram id. It's Mira but the numbers are hard to see, even with a magnifying glass. As best as I can tell here it is:

MIRA P2$45D40BTP 4013AB2-5AG

Can't find any info when I Google about this ram. Can anyone help me determine the speed?

Thanks,

Steve

The 5 means that it's 5ns. speed in MHz = 1000/5=200MHz

So the ram is meant to go up to 200 MHz but how far it will go is diferent from chip to chip.

5 ns, huh? So, the ram doesn't have much headroom for oc-ing, it would seem.

I got the card installed and I'm running ATI Tool artifact scanning mode for 30 minute intervals as I increase the ram speed in 5 mhz steps. So far, its stable and artifact free at 210. When I seemed to have reached the max stable ram speed with AIT Tool, I'll run it through the paces with Aquamark3, 3DMark2001 and 3DMark03. Then I'll repeat the process to find max core speed. Does that seem reasonable?

You know, I experienced something weird in trying to install drivers for this card, though. The card would not recognize the latest DNA modded driver but it would recognize the latest official Catalyst Driver from ATI's website. Anybody have any insight here?

I usualy just bump up the frequency till I get artifacts and then put it on loop in 3dmark or just go play my favorite game for 30min.

And don't bother yourself too much with the memory speed, becouse the core speed gives a biger preformance boost when overclocked.

Okay, after extensive testing I have arrived at 400.50/220.50 as stable and artifact free core/memory oc speeds. That improves my fps speed in ATiTool by 45%. I probably could have pushed the core a little more but what's the point. The limited ram oc headroom leaves the gpu starved for data and the law of dimminishing returns quickly sets in.

MyName, can you fix me up with an appropriate 9600 pro bios flash file?

Techpowerup doesn't have you'r original bios file so you're gona have to use ATI Tool to get your original bios and postit up here.

I don't know how to do that with ATiTool. The only thing I could find about the bios in ATiTool was "Dump bios" and that sounded rather dangerous to me.

Using SiSoft Sandra I got this info about the video bios, however:

BK-ATI VER008.017D.O16.000

Is that what you're asking about?

Okay, I did some research on dumping the bios with ATiTool and realized it was just a backup tool. I made a file called orgbios.bin. Now, how do I post it? Okay, I see an attachment tool here on the forum so let's try it.

Seemed to work. I had to change the extension from .bin to .txt, however to be able to upload it. Is this what you need, MyName?

MyName,

Did I get you what you needed to make me a bios flash file?
