Hi guys!

I just joined TechPowerup forums. I've been enjoying reading the forums about HD3870 vid cards and the bios flashing and overclocking has got me hooked.

I've had problems trying to overclock my HIS HD3870 IceQ turbo. Default clock speeds are 850-1190. Bios is 079.

CCC 8.4 will test an 860 memory clock maximum but won't accept it. It always goes back to default. So I tried ATI tool. It won't run on my system. Then I tried ATI tray tools. It runs but won't overclock the card and in system information it says "overdrive supported - no" and "current VPU 13.50 and current MEM 13.5"

Has anyone overclocked this card or tried flashing a new video bios?

Welcome to TPU!

Sounds like you are trying to let the CCC Auto-Tune set your MAX overclock. This is an "iffy" way of getting your card OC'd. Just use the Overdives sliders a little at a time and test for stability. Since you already have ATITool installed, you can use the built-in artifact scanner to see if your OC was too much OR you can run a benchmark like 3DMark06.

Keep us posted on your progress.

...and I second jbunch07's suggestion of RivaTuner.

Hi guys,

Thanks for replying to my post jbunch07 and Dr. Spankenstein!

I was actually using the sliders in CCC to test overclocks but all I could get out of it was a small increase then when I accepted it, it would go back to default.

Anyhow, I downloaded Rivatuner and low and behold it seems to be working. I'll have to see how far I can go before volt modding, then after volt modding.

It's ironic that an overclocking utility that was originally produced for Nvidia cards is the only one that is working on my ATI card. Ya learn something new every day.

Thanks again gentlemen!

I cant believe you didnt have rivatuner immediately with that card. I have two and they both overheat like a bastard due to their crappy bios. Make sure you turn the fans all the way up(or wherever the db is acceptable to you) with Rivatuner.

Hi xmarine0311,

Thanks for the reply!

OK...so am I correct in assuming that the HIS 3870 turbo card will take a bios flash just like the other ATI 3870's? I'm already using the 079 bios.

Will I be able to run faster clock speeds than my curent 850-1190?

If Your Card is Like my HIS 2600 Pro, they probably OC'd it at the factory and then locked the frequency's so catalyst can't adjust them.

Riva Tuner v2.08 will let you adjust the clock/Mem/Fans

I suggest slowly stepping the core or mem one at a time till it won't go any further, then subtract about 10+ mhz from each (for stability), set the clocks and run stability tests.
