MilkyWay ... Get some Isopropyl Alcohol. You will be fine, and you won't have to spend money on products that use it anyway.

I know for a fact that maplin sells IPA in volumes of 500ml and 1000ml. I know of an online store that sells IPA to at a low price, here's a link to it store. IPA will be the best stuff for the job really.

Maplin legend there is one in the city centre at st enochs square

my pal got a soldering kit from there to solder on his emgs to his guitar

its okay if the isopropyl percantage is lower, it just means theres a lower concentration of iso alcohol and a higher percentage of water, usually at your average pharmacy you get 71% and 91% percent, the latter being more expensive, but worth it, basically if you get the 71%, it just means that:

-you'll need more iso alcohol to clean because theres a lower concentration of isopropanol
-drying times will be higher because of the higher water quantities. you can always use a blow dryer to make it dry faster
-other then that, theres no problem, and like i said, most pharmacies will carry 91% iso alochol, if not, you'll find 71% probably.

also, a common mistake is that people wash off the iso alcohol with water, DO NOT do this, isopropyl alcohol will evaporate in a short amount of time and leave your components completely clean, washing with water would just reverse the effects of the alcohol, and leave impurities on the cpu.

also final note:

rubbing alcohol is usually if not always isoproyl alcohol, rubbing alcohol is a more common name of it, just ask the pharmacist for rubbing alcohol (most pharmacies will carry this), and just make sure that theres no scents or oils and that the active ingredient is isopropanol and no other active ingredient is listed, and also water should be the only inactive ingredient.

The link I posted is to a store that sells 99.9% pure IPA. Also, maplin's IPA is also 99.9% pure. :)

Best thing out there by far is Arctic Coolings, Articlean. Citrus based, good smell and the best emulsifier around for removing paste. It even has an after clean purifier. Cheap to get and better than Alcohol in my estimation. Ive used both and even had 100% "cleaning" alcohol when I worked at the pharmaceutical company. We used that and HAD to mix it with DI water so as not to get gagged by the fumes (we got inside blenders and actually cleaned them) and not to have a white residue left over from the drying.

so Id go Articlean and be done with it.

Wow! you must have used IPA in high quantities to be overcome by the fumes! The only time I've been overcome with IPA fumes is when it's mixed in paint, but I just wear a respirator while I'm spraying

Good stuff! They're a bit expensive sometimes, but the rubbing alcohol is an alright price. Also, I bought a soldering iron on there to fit a kill switch on my guitar the other week

99.9% iso alcohol is quite expensive and overkill imo, 91% does just fine for a cheaper price, while articlean is good, its preety expensive, one thing of articlean + shipping is enough to get like 2 big bottles of iso alochol

as for fumes... i've got to be confined in a tiny box with 100% iso alochol and be sniffing it from the bottle to really become overcome by the fumes..

Let's face it.
If you have nothing to use, just scrape the old goop off with the side of a credit card or something else.
Wipe the surface as best you can with a clean rag and try to get it as clean as possible.
Use a little spit for the stuck areas.

Apply new goop and go for it.

$10 says you won't see more that a couple of C difference.

From the site I linked it's ÂŁ4.50 for a litre + shipping :). In maplin it's about ÂŁ5 for 500ml, but it's in a spray can type of thing. I think Articlean would run him bit more than that.

Yeah i dont see anyone getting high on fumes  reminds me of a guy my friend knew who claimed he got high on hash fumes, he is an idiot.

If they have some stuff in Maplin i might buy it if its not super costly due to the fact id rather not order this online.
Thing is i hope the CPU arrives next week so i will need to get the stuff tomoz probly need to get the MX-2 paste on ebay :shadedshu

ps. Goalissimo is a Football program on Ch4 at 2 in the morning its dyno if you want to know about the European leagues or the other leagues like Brazils Serie A or the American MLS. They do highlights and show you goals from games they voice over everything so there is no studio crap just goals and cool videos. Ah the days when Ch4 used to show Serie A Italian football  Now you get it on Five becasue they brought it back :D

If I am removing AS5 or ceramique or other pastes I use IPA 99%. For tougher stuff like the goop they put on some memory or chipsets that hardens up I use pure acetone (you can get it wherever they sell car body repair supplies) and then follow that up with IPA. The acetone works FAST compared to the IPA.

Yes you need to be careful around plastics with acetone but on the electronics devices there is no concern. Been using it for years with no issue.

I used to use "Goo Gone" a Citrus based product. It was great at getting the stuff off, but a thread like this pointed out the oil in it so I used it to get the stuff off and then Acetone to get the "Goo Gone" gone....;)

I use ArctiClean. Good stuff, I use it. Actually the last time I used it was 2 days ago when I had to clean my Q6600 and put it in my other motherboard.

i've used arcticlean to clean CPU's, GPU's, contacts on ram modules, CPU sockets, and my car rearvision mirrors.

The stuff is citrus based, so it just doesnt hurt anything, and it cleans wonderfully - even the people who are happy with what they've got, should give it a shot.
