What do you think? I have 2 EVGA 8800GTX ACS3 edition cards in SLI. If I sell them I could get a 9800 GX2.

Should I?

performance wise i doubt it's worth the upgrade. But if u sell your sli and purchase this 9800gx2 you stay competitive and attractive to the potential 9800gx2 buyers, because you know you will do the move to a even nastier card pretty soon... :)

Yeah, migrating into the 9xxx generation with minimal expense is another consideration.

Even though performance wise is not that different that you will notice fireworks in the sky but if funds are not a problem then ofc i will personally approve any step up upgrade .

Not worth it. HD 4000's are right around the corner, might as well trade for those.

No way. This is a nVidia system. My next build be probably be ATI based, but it will be for my soon-to-be wife.

swapping to a GX2 would yield a few gains.

Far lower power use. Less physical room in the case used. Improved HD decoding for blu ray media. Quieter stock cooling.

Obviously, they may not matter to you but those are teh advantages.. its possible it might even be slower than your current setup. it'll just be newer and cooler.

All very good advantages that do indeed matter to me (HD decoding is a bit of a meh for now). Have you seen my rig? Any saved space would be a huge deal. Those advantages lose their luster if I would see a performance hit though.

imo, performance would be about equal unless you really need that extra 256MB of ram ( remember SLI doesnt add ram, so you're going from 768MB to 512MB)

My modded GT matches/beats my GTX, except at high res with high AA - but with lower settings its faster, quieter, and cheaper on the electricity.

If you can sell them for more than a GX2 is worth, sure. You'll be getting a newer card and a few bucks in the pocket (and possibly a new game in the bundle).

Performance wise though, not much difference.

i would go for the 9800gx2 less power consumption, newer features etc and when the gtx2** out very soon the prices of the 9800gx2 should be very competitive in 6 months time, quad sli anyone ?

Dumping the two 8800s and going to one GX2 opens a slot up for a second GX2 upgrade in the future. Or... I could keep what I have and get a third 8800 in the future... but my understand is that scaling issues prevent any significant performance gains with 3-way SLI. I could be wrong though.

Sell it for a gtx 280 in a couple of months. They are gonna launch at $599, about $50 more than the average gx2, but they are already beating the gx2 by a decent amount w/ beta drivers. Give it 2 months for the price to drop and the drivers to mature, and you'll be good. And yeah, as of yet, 3-way sli is useless except in the pursuit of super benchmarks. Otherwise, 2 will do more than you'll ever need.

You could even look into a GTX260 or whatever the slightly lesser version is called and go SLI with them later. In any event you should wait things until for a few days until those new cards come out :)

The way the GTX280 performs, the 260 would be a downgrade.

Doubtful. At the price point it's coming in at, it will likely preform a tad worse than the gx2. The g80 does not scale terribly well from what I've seen, so it would be an upgrade w/ the potential of doubling it in the future.

get the GX2 and then another later quad sli would rock and your performance will be equal or a tad better not to mention

New features
Less heat output(cool down all those components)
Less electricity
More room
quieter

Ok, sounds like holding off for the GTX280 is a pretty good strategy. Thanks for all the inputs folks.

NOOOOO!!!!! When it comes to the biggetst reason to SLI the GX2 chokes compared to the GTX, the GX2 doesn't do well with AA, and AF... check out eVga forums, this has been said there time and time again that the best thing to do is hang on to those GTX
