Hi. I'm on the verge of upgrading my video card from a Radeon X700 Pro to a Radeon X1600 Pro. I'd like to know what you guys think. Is it a good idea? Or is it a stupid idea to upgrade from one mid ranged card to another?

I did some research and this is what I came up with:

As you can see, the X1600 Pro only outclasses the X700 in terms of core clock (even then its not much) and pixel pipelines. And not to mention the DirectX 9.0c and Shader Model 3.0.

But the X700 transfers memory at 1gb/s more than the X1600!

Ok, I don't even play Half Life 2 (I played it for like 10 minutes and went back to my old favorites). So I just want to know, that if discounting the fact that I'm not looking to play NFS MW and stuff like that, is it a dumb idea or not?

I'd appreciate your comments. Thanks.

Why not look into the x800 or x850 cards. An x850xt isnt that expensive anymore.

Like you said why go from 1 mid card to another? If games (new ones) dont matter to you dont waste your money. I have a pretty fast custom built comp (2915mhz AMD)and I use a X800 video card. Most others in my group use X1900 or 7900GTX (about $500 ea)
I do play NFS and my X800 plays it fine.(only cost $100 but its PCIX16)

Use your money for something else like a better PS or another HDD to start learning about Raid.

Dont bother. at least look at a X1600XT varient with DDR3, but honestly, get something like a X800XL\GTO or a 6800GT

yes, wait just 1 1/2 months to take a 7600gt, i think it's the best buy between all the midrange cards and has the support for SM3! take a look about..

I've had bad experiences with both ATI and nVidia... as well as very good ones with both, and I have no preference towards one or the other. Mid-range cards with major flaws are not that common, in fact it's much less common than it is for high-end cards where the "experimental" factor weighs in. Whether a card will be suitable or not often depends a lot on system compatibilities issues and support availability, which is vendor dependent. El Cheapo cards whether based on ATI or nVidia hardware will always be El Cheapo cards with crappy support* when there is support at all
