Go back to the previous page of this thread and you can see I have already posted 5 links that have a total of 9 dead cards just on this forum, and there are more here I didn't link. It is not my job to link every single instance on the internet for you. The same problem is being reported on other forums too.

I'm with erocker here. The initial BIOS for HD4800 have some issues with the highest clocks the GPUs can reach. Most probably a noob would've stepped up clocks without accordingly adjusting timings/voltages etc. > Bad flash > crib about DOA card on forums, just because the card didn't respond to a flash. The RV770 must be having a different EEPROM of some sort and using older versions of flash software might not go too well with it.

Apparently there's been issues with the GT280 as well, so if the issue with the HD4870 is genuine your'e damed both ways.

Funny thing is I haven't heard anything about the HD4850s having issues and those cards run hot.

Checked out the Xtrememsystems thread and it looks like the BIOS flash did it as all the users who owned 4870's replied saying thier cards are running fine.

Specific to RV770, no evidence, but it's noted that with evolution, GPUs get different EEPROMs. For example, the evolution of G7x GPU's over NV40 there was a different EEPROM, which triggered developers to upgrade Nibitor, NVFlash, and other BIOS related tools.

I've been keeping up with that and the majority of those having problems have either flashed their bios or attempted some sort of mod. I've also noticed a few posting "the sky is falling" in an attempt to exacerbate the issue to make it more then what it is. IMHO, I don't see this as a problem

Er, actually this whole thread is flame bait. Groundless rumours inflated to "fact", theres too many of these type of threads which confuses people. I would have made no comment if the OP's card had gone belly up and he was seeking others in the same boat, but that is not the case. Just scaremongering.

With cards this powerful, ppl still find the need to flash them :shadedshu The 4870 is already overkill & it OCs from CCC just fine. The only problem I see for these cards is heat. The card will burn if you flash it so high that the poor fan stuck at 18% can do anything for it. Squeezing 10% more performance out of these things just ain't worth, especially when you don't need it.

I think it's the ram .I have had two video cards die with that companies ram on them. This unnamed ram company had a large problem with 8800 series cards deing with their ram on them.

The point of the thread is that several of these cards are dieing and not just from voltage mods. The ram dies if overclocked. I'm gonna find out since mine comes tomarrow. That is one thread dedicated to this top. There are several more . if anyone else has this problem they can post it here. If not post that aswell. There is no reason to get upset. The fact is these cards are failing, and you are right most have been modded but several have merly been overclocked.

How did you figure? At least this was something worth investigating and i'm no fanboy. If anything I like ATI. Man you guys need to chill out.

It appears to me you took the number of cases of dead cards and added your explanation as to why they died. Again, from what I've read those who had dead cards also altered them in one form or another. Can you provide examples were these 9 individuals had dead cards without altering them? Is there some sort of documented information about these problems with the ICs when overclocked?

In all honesty lets not start a panic. If anything we need a better understanding of the situation instead of making assumptions. Also, lets rely on what people here say about the card when they get them. At least we know they won't attempt any mods after reading about this.
