This is my first post on the site, lots of good info floating around in here though so I figure a little more couldnt hurt.
Ive got a KT6V mobo with an XP 3000 in it, supposed to run at 2.2Ghz. It doesnt, but its close.
Anyway, whenever I try to raise the clock speed, either the fsb or the multiplier, it either freezes ( if i do it in windows ) or doesnt post ( if done in bios )
I cant figure out for the life of me why and it driving me mad.
Supposedly the mobo is good for oc'ing or so Ive heard but Ive had no luck with it yet.
Thanks in advance folks.

Try to raise the voltage of CPU, SYS and RAM.
If you raise FSB, you have to decrease AGP and memory clock (mostly by some divider).

Is there a universal max safe voltage level? hehe.
Ive looked it up before but there hasnt been any strict guidelines I could find.
I have a 600w ps tho, so I guess im good for most anything in that dept.

Your CPU is working at 1.65V, raising to 1.85V should be OK if you have good cooler. Try lower values first and then raise step by step(1.70V, 1.75V,...) as much as you need.

bartons are end of the line T/bird chips with more cache.. most of them are pretty well maxed out at the default out of the box speed.. the most mine could manage was a smidge over 2.2 gig..

the 3200 actually runs a bit slower and just gets its higher pr rating from its 200 fsb..

not all cpus come clocked at half speed like the 64 bit ones do.. he he he

Spot on! I had the Barton 3000 and same Mobo and managed to get her to just under 2300 or thereabouts and as Trog said, they are pretty well at their max hence why the 2600/2800 Bartons are known to be good overclockers cause they will go upto 2300 odd! same chip just diff FSB speed/multiplier.

3000 should be at 2.166GHz, 2.2GHZ was the 3200 not the 3000 lol.
thats why it's close but not there.
you can't change the mult for the 3000 it's locked, fsb will depend on your chip, cooling, and memory settings.
for example 3000 has a 166(333) fsb anda 13 mult. attempting to raise the fsb to 200(400) will result in no post as no 3000 i've seen will hit 2.6GHZ or air.
so a smaller upping like say 170 by 13 which would be 2210 at say 1.7v should be fine then you can try to go up from there, but is should max out at 2300 as the others have stated.
175 might be the max your chip will do.

Doh! hehe yer right, 2167 Mhz.
Anyhow, no matter what i do to it it locks at even 2167 Mhz, but Im going to try to up the voltage a tad.
I suppose if I fry it I do have a 2400 sittin here too hehe.

Alright, after letting Oblivion run since my last post I have concluded the best Im going to get with the stock hsf is 2.24Ghz. Not a bad oc i suppose. Everything higher than that caused Oblivion to crash after a few seconds with extras like shadows and 6x aa and all that enabled.
Now it chugs with those settings but at least when theyre off I get a decent framerate out of it.
Thanks for the help, much appreciated folks.
Gonna try to oc my video card a bit, see if i cant get the extra little bit out of it as well.

oblivion crashes on both my PCs on a regular basis.. just thows me out to the desktop.... it does it no matter what speed i run the hardware at or what settings i have the game at.. and it does exactly the same thing on both my machines.. both via chipsets amd powered with ati grfx cards..

the game itself is unstable so dont use it as a stabilty test.. it brings its own instability with it... he he he he

it can play for a couple of hours with no crash or do it twice in ten minutes.. luckily it dosnt lock up the machine and i can go straight back in.. i just have to keep hitting the quick save button often.. he he

it seems to be connected with texture loading.. the most common instance by far is when i try and pass thru a door.. instead of the little loading screen i get instant desktop.. the other instance is a big sword slash at a wolf in the country.. that one has me baffled cos i cant connect it with texture loading.. he he he he..

Hm, Ill have to look around for something else to test it with then to be sure.
I dont have many pc games but I suppose I could use doom 3 as a test.

Good overclock! and do you find that that is pretty much the stable max?

Same for me when I had my Barton 3000, could not get her past 2300, tried for like a year, sold it in the end for £105 on E Bay and bought a 64 3200 for less!!!!!!!
