Fujitsu Announces 5.6-inch Atom-Powered UMPC

Fujitsu's LifeBook FMV Biblo U/B50 will be its latest feature-rich UMPC offering. It offers a stylish, eye-catching chassis that holds a 5.6" display. This pushes it into the netbook domain but is quickly pulled back by its set of features at a point of portability. To begin with, the screen swivels like that of a tablet PC, just that it isn't a touch-screen. The screen offers a 1280 x 800 px native resolution, there is a fixed webcam too.

It is powered by the Intel Atom Z530 clocked at 1.60 GHz and 1 GB of DDR2 memory. Fujitsu claims it should suffice for Windows Vista, the OS it ships with. On to the connectivity front, There's 802.11n Wi-Fi, 3G, and Bluetooth to provide connectivity. Options with storage include 60GB, 100GB or 120GB HDD, or a 64GB SSD. Display outputs include the HDMI port facing its front to let you connect it to larger screens. Prepare to shell out ¥123,800 (that's US $ 1,128) if you want one in Japan.

HDMI port on the front!? Who want a cable dangling out interfering with your ability to use the keyboard and pointer? Silly. Should be at the back.

They certainly packed a lot into a system of that size, but I do have to agree with Lemonade's comment above^, not sure I'd want a cable hanging out of the front. Besides that, impressive.

That's kind of what I was thinking. If they would come out with a "ruggedized" version that would be perfect for some work applications in the field in many different industries.

Exactly. No more built in DVD players in vehicles. Just put a UMPC that can run crysis! :laugh:

Imagine having 4 or more of these built into a car??? Link them up with Wi-fi & now every road trip can be fun!!!

omg this is amazing! & also the shaking of the car would make it so much more fun as your aim would be constantly thrown off!

I tested using an EEE PC 900 for a classroom situation. The footprint of the laptop is VERY small and I still found it easy to take down notes.

I ended up having to wait for 10 minutes in total for the rest of the class to finish note taking :laugh:

Screen would be unreadable; 270 DPI... "ARG! My eyes! I need a magnifying glass!"
Other than that, the battery life would be underwhelming and typing on it would be a PITA.
Its a nice concept, but I wouldn't buy it.

All you need is:

1./ Special gloves with "thin pointy fingers"

2./ Giant prism magnifying glasses to give you virtual widescreen

3./ A large case to carry 1 and 2

4./ Dont forget to take off your glasses when looking away from the screen!
