Which card has better performance? I have heard the 4870 is slightly better?

Just out of interest. Have you searched for this in the forums? We have loads of these threads. Maybe you can find some info there.

Then if you need more info, ask maybe would x card be better for my setup and the games I want to play, etc.

the cards perform pretty much the same but the HD4870 has an edge,

the deciding factor will be whether you like nvidia or ati's drivers

At stock speeds the 4870 is better, however GTX260 can be overclocked to GTX280 levels VERY easily therefore making it much better. I would go with a GTX260, especially for the price....only reason I still do ATI is because I run CrossFire and Intel chipsets are MUCH better than nVidia chipsets.

BTW: This is coming from a diehard ATI fan.

I'm gonna say GTX 260, Normally I would go with the red camp on this one but I believe the 260 wins if Oc'd I believe, 4870 is pretty darn close to taking it on in a few games beats both 260 and 280 when crossfired, and besides nvidia was coming out with an updated 260 weren't they???

Id go with hd4870 not because i own 1 but with that stock cooling ripped off with a arctic s1 on you should be able to get a large overclock but you could go for a 260gtx as they arn't that much more then the 4870

I have used both 4870 and 260, if you choose 260 because its "overclockabiliy", think twice.
In my setup it takes the 260 25% overclock(the max i get get) to match the 4870 at 820/1100

I say both cards are good..ATI has a better picture..if i was to upgrade it would not be the 4870 or the 260-- it would be the 280

facts are facts, you can lie about them but you cant avoid them. GTX260 is a dumbed down version of a 280. Do a few volt mods, overclock, and you could probably surpass a stock 280.

Got a 4870 two weeks ago... VisionTek from the Egg @$235 AR - up from a 2900Pro. I haven't been more happy with an upgrade (possibly with the exception of going from a prescott to a Core2, LOL!).

Stock everything (except an idle speed fan tweak in the CCC profile), the Catalyst Autotune brought the clocks to 780/1090 without a hiccup. Temps never got above 68c.

I'm busy playing Half Life Episode 2 (I hadn't gotten to that one), and all settings maxed out @1920x1200 it's smooth as silk. The thing blows me away.

Just out of curiosity, how does your 4870 do with crysis at 1920x1200, I stay at 30-50fps but I've got the 280gtx. Yeah I know, expensive crap.. I just don't handle the ccc well...

There will be an updated GTX 260, but it will cost about 50$ more than the vanilla version. :rolleyes:

But anyways, it's up to preference. If you prefer Nvidia go for GTX260, and if you prefer ATI then go with 4870.

I get ~25-30FPS (on Harbor level) with my 4870 (with the ASUS TOP bios + OC) on an Athlon x2 rig (at 3.4GHz). Thats with a custom config as well.

nvidia users dont like the ati drivers which puts them off a little but for me its fien either set of drivers are fine

get the 4870 its slightly cheaper and you can get one with non stock cooling and an oc already factory done

people forget you can oc the 4870 aswell to get it to over 280gtx speeds

Just flash the ASUS TOP bios and you can get some very nice OC's, unlocks CCC to 900MHz

GTX260... i would wait a little longer, there coming out with the GTX260+ which will be 55nm and have 24+ more shaders!
