Denied access to files

Ok I got a pc in from a friend and he wants me to fix it, it doesn't boot up properly so I was thinking reinstall windows but first I have to save all his songs and crap. First problem it denies me access to the files on his HDD when it is hooked up to my pc .... damn. Second problem is that it is a very, very old pc nforce 2 chipset and I can't ID the board so I can't get the drivers. It won't turn on so I can't check it that way any ideas.

Do you have the drive hooked up to your computer as a second drive (D: ?)
You should be able to see everything. Did he password protect the folders, or encrypt them with a key?

Nah he wouldn't know how to do that, its a windows thing figured it out all I had to do was change the owner. Wierd because I've never had to do that before. The main thing that is bugging me though is that it won't boot. The stuff in it is quite old I was thinking about getting a budget board and cpu and ram and updating it ? anyone with me on that.

Nforce2 > nvidia.com. There you find drivers.

As for accessing files, take ownership.

That's not a bad option is the mobo or cpu is actually the probem. Could be the PSU?

What about drivers for the mobo in general though. Its like backwards pci ports nd shit :confused:

@ kriej: I thought maybe the psu may be the problem or the HDD is so full of shit, its like wading through the sewers.

Yeah, that's "fun". Installed Vista on another HDD and it wouldn't let me delete the old one in the other, just access is denied. Changing the owners wasn't enough tho, had to do that, inherit all the rights from parent folder and then give full rights to my self on that folder

Ok that problem solved, so what about the problem not booting, could be anything right ? it starts the xp loading screen and restarts. Even on safe mode etc.

Sounds like a bad xp install. A fresh install would be the first thing I would try.

Yep I done a fresh reinstall earlier and its up and running, Just need to find the ethernet drivers for the mobo.
