We are starting to see more AM2 Benchmarks hit the street or web in this case. Hexus has compared the E6700 and E6600 Conroe Processors against the AMD AM2 FX-62. In every benchmark E6700 wins.

...I feel bad for AMD :p. I just hope that the lower thermal output will help overclocking alot. Othwerwise, I doubt people will be going for AM2, which really is just s939 with DDR2. Everyone already knew that, but we just needed confirmation. Thanks!

Yeah, it looks like there is a higher overclocking potential on these AM2 CPU's, like an extra 200mhz more headroom of air attainable stable clocks from 2.8, now to 3.0 with 1.52v and stock cooling, while the Fx-62 does 3.1 on same voltage. But it still loses out to the Intel Conroe.

I'll stick with my conservatively clocked 2.6ghz Dual Opteron for socket 939 for now...

yeah except for the ones that are cpu bottlenecked (farcry at max speed settings) then it pulls way ahead, but normally people dont play at those settings, thats why when im looking for a new grfx card/cpu i look at what ill be playing at(or trying to) wich is 1280x1024 with probly 4x AA and 8 or 16x AF, and the cpu is realy not that much of a factor anymore since its putting all the strain on the grafx card, as long as you have a pritty decent cpu, thats why as you see when u start playing the games a high res and AA the scores even out

The fact that the conroe is alot cheaper than a fx62 already seals it

Wow. Intels part is still a half a year out and we're getting all of this.

Yes Intel has an excellent processer coming up, yes it ends the bad-news streak of Netburst, yes it is revolutionary, and is a better architecture than AMD64.

But the damn thing is MONTHS from first retail samples. First people compare it to Socket 939 processors, nothing really wrong with the comparison, but of course Conroe should beat the pants off of it, it's a next-gen acrhitecture and A64s have been around for YEARS.

Now the comparisons with the AM2s start, a little more fair, but there will be another FX or two by the time Conroe is released. Coupled with the transition to 65nm, I wouldn't be surprised to see the competing FX then to top 3 GHz, which will probably bring back competition between the two.

I just won't be to hasty to say that Conroe is the be-all-end-all in CPUs. It's excellent to see Intel in the running again, but they've shown this processor VERY early for one reason.... hype.

thats what we are talking about. anything that used screws or didnt use the stock heatsink retention unit will not be able to be hooked onto a am2 mobo until a 3rd party adapter is made for it.

Your dates are inaccurate it launches in July 2006. I personally don't equate that to 6 months?

I love AMD too, and until now, AMD was the best choice for performance and gaming CPUs, but this is to be expected IMO.

A company as large as Intel is not going to be smacked around for very long without retaliating. It was only a matter of time before they released a more efficient architecture and steered away from netburst.

When they threw away the plans for the 4ghz P4 chip, that is when they started to realize that making higher clocked, poorly designed processors would only dig themselves in a deeper hole.

I think the best analogy for this is "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em."

I guarantee AMD will come back though, it's only a matter of time, and who knows, maybe they'll do a die shrink soon or release something badass for AM2, making it worth the upgrade.

For now though, I'm either going to skip AM2, or just wait it out and see where it goes.

I'd like to point out that the FX-62's memory bandwidth was about 3gbps higher, thus the Conroe didn't win in every benchmark.:p I don't know about you guys but I'm waiting until Vista comes out before I get in to any next gen stuff. Although it's looking like it will be a Conroe unless the AM3s will be coming out around the time Vista does.

yup, all this next gen stuff is realy nothing since there isnt any next gen platforms out yet (ie dx10), you will just be next gen ready.. but id rather buy stuff when the next gereration is availible (dx10 = vista)

The fact that the FX-62's memory bandwidth was so much higher is irrelevant to the system as a whole. What Hexus is doing is putting Intel's mid-range Conroes up against AMD's high-end CPUs, to show that the Conroes outclass the FX in most real-life situations (and especially in multi-media applications).

So far, every Conroe preview I've seen has put the new Intel CPUs streets ahead of the competition. I'll withhold final judgement until I can see independent benchmark results of a retail Conroe CPU, but right now it looks like 2006 is gonna be Intel's big comeback.
