INTEL decides to play it safe by only clocking the Conroe XE to 2.93 GHz as opposed to the suspected 3.33GHz. Further allowing headroom for future clock bumps to leapfrog the next AMD high end release if needed.

TheINQ said:
Intel looks to be doing what Nvidia and ATI keep doing to each other, waiting for one side to pick a number and then beating it by just enough to claim victory. This ups margins and makes for a more profitable part, or a cheaper part if it is feeling altruistic.

Intel set the bar where it wanted it to be, and it does indeed look to be "enough".

I'd rather have a Conroe @ 2.93 GHz that I can overclock quite a bit rather than a Conroe @ 3.33GHz that I can overclock very little. Go Intel, I was about to go AMD for a second when I heard about AM2, then Conroe came, and I'm Intel again.

I think this goes to show Conroe wont be such a great overclocker with retail chips.

Wazzel I'll tell you once I get my 2.40 E6600 to 3.4 on Air :)

POGE it shows the clock speed, but this is a more in depth analysis :), POGE that article dosen't say it was origionally going to be 3.33 GHz

And how does it show this?
Because all we have seen till this point is engineering samples that are hand picked as the best of the best. If any conroe can overclock to 3.6 ghz on air, why the hell would Intel release its top chip at 2.93 ghz? I think it shows that the majority of chips will not clock nearly as much as we have been seeing the engineering samples.

Just because all we've seen are engineering samples doen't mean the rest will be trash. Engineering samples are meant to give you an idea of what to expect, and they represent an unfinished product. I do not doubt that they were hand picked, but I do think it's rediculous to look at them, the launch models, and then tell me Conroe will be a shitty overclocker.

As a number of sites have stated, Intel is releasing the XE at 2.9 because they want to be able to release higher clocked ones when AMD produces a challenging product. Plus at 2.9GHz, they will have better yields. When you have a really nice chip on your hands, you don't just crank them out at the highest clocks possible. That leaves you with nowhere to go when the competition releases something you can't immediately counter. Think about it. If almost any single core 939 opteron could hit 3.0-3.4GHz on air, why would AMD be releasing them at speeds of 1.8 to 2.4 GHz? According to your theory of chip giant economics, they should have been releasing them at speeds of at least 2.8 GHz.
There is a 2.8 GHz opteron, and from what I have seen they only get to about 3.2 ghz max on air.

Yes Intel may want to crank up the clocks later, but they are leaving an abnormally large gap between what they are capable of and what they supposedly clock to. It doesnt add up when compared to any previous market practices.

..sure it does...p4-2g to p4-3.8g...athlonxp went from wat 1500 up to 3000+....they want to sell u a couple over the life of the series...it definitely does add up to every marketing strategy to date...

Well the way I see it is if your an overclocker you go with either option A or option B.

Option A

E6300 2mb L2 Cache( 1mb per core) 1.86 GHz (likely can OC to at least 2.5 on air) priced at 183$ USD.

Option B
E6600 4mb L2 Cache (2mb per core) 2.40 GHz (Likely to OC at least 3.0 on air) priced at $316

I'm going with Option B because the E6700 dosent make much sense .27GHz for 200 bucks??? Plus 4MB L2 cache looks nice :). Big upgrade from 512kb. I suggest waiting for reviews of the retail products before deciding on which model, especially if your considering the E6300 or E6400. I pretty much have my sights set on the E6600 :).

I think this processor is going to be a good overclocker, I think AMD and Intel both have seen that Overclocking is becoming more mainstream and actually has rather large impact on sales, I mean look at the Opteron 140-175's. I think it might be best to wait and see with these chips though.

I'll probably go with the E6300 unless I get more money for an E6600. I still have to get a 975X chipset mobo. But besides those two, everything I have now is fine and will work with the E6x00 and 975X Chipsets.

Im building an entire new rig, aiming for somewhere in the 1,500-2k range. Depending on what I feel like doing for graphics.

the only competitor that has to really try is the one that is behind.. the one in front chooses not to raise the bar any more than it has too.. its just the way it is with intel and amd.. a tweedle dee and teedle dum kinda competition.. its not real..

trog

ps.. amds reply to intel being in front will be just to get cheaper.. that will suits me cos it leaves me more money to spend on the bit that matters.. the grfx card.. he he he

2.93GHz is not bad if all you consider what the 2.66GHz E6700 did to the AMD FX-60 (939) clocked at 2.8Ghz.

I can expect the 2.93Ghz Conroe to be comparable to... let's say a 3.2Ghz AMD AM2
