Windows 10 Oct 2018 Update Process Runs Aground with Certain Intel Processors, Fix Released

Broadwell-E CPUs are also affected because the update includes KB4100347 which breaks overclock settings. Luckily I don't have one of those, nor a skylake and also nothing has been deleted in the \user\(username)\ folder. This is especially fortunate since I got rid of the windows.old folder...

Thrustmaster's New T.Flight U.S. Air Force Edition Gaming Headset Available Soon

Airforce comms sound tinny with a click pssssshhhh between every sentence. (click psssssshhhh) Into the distance a ribbon of black Stretched to the point of no turning back (pssssshhhh click) (click pssssshhhhh) A flight of fancy on a windswept field Standing alone my senses reeled...

AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX Cinebench Numbers Out

Making things very simple, just dividing the score by the core count shows the Intel chip to be the better performer per core. AMD -- 5099/32=159 per core Intel -- 3355/18=186 per core However, that doesn't mean much until the price is factored in.

Custom BIOSes Harden Intel X58 Motherboards Against Meltdown and Spectre

That PC has 12GB of RAM and a GTX 980 and I have no desire to further upgrade it. It's good for the tasks I use it for. My primary PC has an X99 Rampage V Extreme mobo with an i7-5960X..

Custom BIOSes Harden Intel X58 Motherboards Against Meltdown and Spectre

Thanks for posting this. I have a Rampage 2 Extreme and will try the BIOS. Update: Didn't work. I updated the BIOS using EZ Flash 2 and it successfully flashed. However, GRC Inspect still reports that the PC is protected against "Meltdown" only.

Intel Finally Ready With Security Microcode Updates for Broadwell, Haswell

Your Anti-Virus publisher should have updated its software to add those keys. Microsoft's "Check for Updates" process now checks for their presence before installing any spectre/meltdown mitigation security updates. It used to not do that, and the result was BSODs. You can use this tool to...

Intel Finally Ready With Security Microcode Updates for Broadwell, Haswell

I have to wait for fat arse Asus to provide a BIOS update since Intel is now only handing out the microcode updates to its OEM partners.

Venezuela Oils Its Economic Gears With "petro" Cryptocurrency Launch

The sanctions prohibit U.S. finance companies from bankrolling the Venezuelan dictatorship, and there are sanctions targeting certain politicians. Other U.S. companies can do business in Venezuela *if they're reckless enough .* People can buy the stuff they want with their substantial...

Venezuela Oils Its Economic Gears With "petro" Cryptocurrency Launch

That isn't going to make Venezuela a better place. The country needs more people producing stuff that others want to buy and far less paper money in circulation. Unfortunately Venezuela is now a socialist dictatorship where too few have the financial incentive to produce anything anymore.

WHO Classifies Gaming Addiction as a Psychological Disorder

Yes. I'm wondering if the Chinese government had influence in this matter given its penchant for forcing gaming "addicted" kids into rehab centres.

WHO Classifies Gaming Addiction as a Psychological Disorder

The requirement is that if you want stuff someone else has then you're expected to trade something in return. Also, extremely few people if anyone in capitalist society base their success on money. It can make the path easier. For many it's the process of bringing up children to be good...

WHO Classifies Gaming Addiction as a Psychological Disorder

Yeah, that describes my flatmate; as well as being fat (138kg), lazy, and inactive, drinks only Pepsi Max, and goes to bed between 4 and 5am. He's an MMO player heading towards an early grave.

Would you opt-in to allow for CPU mining while visiting the forums for them to remain ad free?

Tricky one. I open twelve browser tabs to read the tech news of the day. I don't mind advertisements as such, but the reason I use an ad-blocker is that all the ads have a serious impact on browser scrolling. I'd be OK with bitcoin mining if it does not impact browser performance and there...

My GTX 1080 Ti is factory overclocked, but I've set it to stock speeds for this test. Boost clock = 1582 , Mem clock 11G. VRMark scores it 8548. btw, anyone with a VR headset ought to try out the Cyan room VR experience. Nice...

Acer Gains Majority Control Over StarVR Joint Venture

I was excited about the StarVR helmet when news of it appeared early last year. Then I found out it was not for sale to end consumers which was a let down to put it mildly. So I'm still waiting for something much better than my HTC Vive to come along.

HTC to Expand Vive to Various Price Points, Updating Original Vive Headset

No no no. Improving the Vive's visual specs should not take a backseat to improving the headset's other bits. They should be developed together. It's all an integrated package and no part should let the side down. There's much scope for improvement in the FOV, resolution, elimination of the...
