Sometimes Your Xbox Is A Brick. Sometimes It Burns Your House Down
Vasanth Sridharan | April 18, 2008 6:01 PM

Small consolation to the Xbox 360 owners who ended up with defective "red ring of death" game consoles last year. At least it didn't burn down your house.

That's what happened to a console owner in Little Rock, Arkansas, this week, when a power cord on their machine supposedly overheated and torched their home.

This isn't the first time an Xbox power cord has caused Microsoft (MSFT) trouble. The good folks at Little Rock station THV tell us that Microsoft has been sued at least twice for fires related to the power cords, and notes that Microsoft recalled 14 million power cords in 2005. But that was for the first generation Xbox.

Microsoft estimates that the power cords pose an issue for 1 in 10,000 units of the newish game machine. Which means that 26 people who bought their Xbox 360s last month should be very careful.

Things just keeping looking worse for the Xbox. :shadedshu

I bought the original xbox 360 when it came out. got my first 3 red rings while playing Halo 3 just after its release. Got my second a month ago. They switched out my power supply and sent me back my same xbox this time. So there is something definitely wrong with first gen PSU's/cables.

Well, it depends on how Microsoft's plan for world domination is coming along. We all know how bad they are at releasing stuff on time, so since their plan was global control from about 6 months after the Xbox 360's release, we probably still have another year or so.

Lol, global market control is a better word for it...But anyhow, right now the Wii (even though I don't like the damn thing) is dominating the market. I wonder if it has had any mess ups yet?

More proof that the 360 is trash....yes it has a good game library, but I'd prefer to not have my house burn down...I'll stick to my PC and my PS3...

there's still a really good chance your PC could torch your house - but as long as you follow the advice of most of the forum members here, that should never be a problem!! :p

Lol the funny thing is, PCs have a greater chance of doing this than a console (from what I've seen).

If you watch the You Tube video the fire department did claim the Xbox was against the wall, not giving it proper ventilation. However, the problem here was not due to over heating, it was a faulty power cord. So I'm not really sure why they even mentioned that.

yeah, poor ventilation can be a problem with most electronics. The only real issue I know of with PCs tends to revolve around cheap, low-grade PSUs that turn faulty.

Lol, I love how people are making these products (like the water cooling)...It's a waste of money in my opinion.

The 360 was rushed out tbh consumer demands were high and ps3 was on the way too the first 360s were really crap lol the newer xbox360s like elites use lower nm chips now and run cooler i dont think the ring of death happens as much mines been sent back twice now and fixed for free so i cant moan really im getting my moneys worth and ms support is better than non at all..both times my console has been back within 2 weeks which i think is great really considering PC RMA's can take alot longer.

It's interesting, but it seems these times can vary a lot. My friend sent his in at the beginning of December and didn't get it back until early January. Although, it is easy to see how that in December they become very busy.

Messups for the Wii: The strap breaks, so if you're getting a little hyperactive playing tennis, and accidentally let of of the remote while swinging, say goodbye to your TV! I've seen pics of the remote having smashed straight through a flatscreen: scary stuff.
Also, unknowing family members walking in while your... idk, playing some random sports game (thats what they mostly are), and your arm comes flying out and smacks them in the face...

As for the 360, I own one, and it has worked fine since christmas. Its one of the newer ones, and runs comparatively cool. Sure, you could still keep a small room warm in winter with it, but its in a big room, so meh.

I so wanted to get the 360, but the reliability issues put me off. An unreliable console defeats the whole purpose of using a console instead of a PC for gaming. Consoles have to be hassle-free by definition, which is why you pay a premium for games. No point in investing in a game library, no matter how great it is, if the hardware can't perform well. The opposite can also be true to some extend with the ps3 (great hardware, not so great library, although getting better). I finally chose a ps3 last year but I have to admit I rarely game with it, a few AAA games aside, so not the best purchase I made recently. I'll stick to it for driving games (GT5, Motorstorm, Formula 1 CE), maybe GTA IV, blu-ray, DTS True-HD Masteraudio, SACD. internet browsing as a backup. I just hope more racing and adventure games (like Drake's fortune) will soon be released. I like my PC better for FPS and RTS (C&C, Sins Solar Empire etc.).

tbh a good pc for gaming is expensive but you cant beat it playing cod 4 on the 360 you can see graphics lag at time in multi player and you can see details have been lowered to get it to play as smooth as possible.

were as on my pc i can play with details up full and still out preform the 360

not to mention the speed of play a mouse is alot faster than a game pad you arent fixed to a set speed.

My thing about the Wii is this...

When I get home from school/work, I want to sit down and relax and play a game. I don't want to to exercise just to have fun and enjoy a video game. Sixaxis is as far as I'll go with that type of thing.
