Hi all,

I'm due an upgrade! It's been a long time since i've read-up about PC components and it's really starting to show.

Looking to build a new system with a £800 budget in mind.

Have read many articles on the Intel vs Ryzen and i'm still lost. Current thought process is....

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600x
Mobo: MSI X470 GAMING PLUS
GPU: GeForce 1070 Ti
RAM: 8x16GB DDR4
Case: NZXT H500

Any input is appreciated.

Stay clear of the NZXT case unless you have patience and tiny fingers and a heat gun to bend the CPU wires. There is no room for them and the included fan. 1070Ti is a nice cool running GPU. It will, I think be beaten by the 2060 for less money. CPU seems fine but how will you fit 8 stick of RAM in that MB or any that will take a 9600K? Sure some cleaver person will point at a WS MB but that is not what you want for a gaming rig.

The H500 is neat.. Let's you mount the GPU sideways.. The case itself is made really thin... It isn't going to last through many upgrades.
I would consider a 2060 over the 1070ti
16gb ram is good enough.

Hi @mstenholm,

I fear I may have modified the original post as you submitted yours. Good point on the 2060 - i've just read a few reviews and you're right, it does seem that the 2060 is not only cheaper but a better performer.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600x
Mobo: ---
GPU: RTX2060 OC 6GB Fan
RAM: 8x16GB DDR4
Case: NZXT H500

I'm reluctant to change the case as this was a freebie :)

OK hard to say no to a freebie. Make sure that you plug in th CPU power on the MB (Intel or AMD) before you seat the MB in the case. I still doubt that you can fit the top fan. I can see that you changed the Intel for an AMD. Sure that hardcore gamers will think that you made a mistake there. You new choice of MB will still not let you put in 8 sticks of RAM. As you can see I have two MSI AMD x470 Gaming M7 AC and I can only praise them but you can find cheaper I'm sure. I will have my first 2060 in a few day so I can't really tell if it good or not. By the way I don't game and I don't OC my AMDs. I think that decent speed RAM is still the way to go for AMD but that is an arm and a leg.

An interesting question, seeing as you can fit all of this into an 800 quid budget, is what your monitor specs are. Resolution and refresh rate/FPS, what are you looking to run smoothly?

If it is not high refresh rates, Ryzen is a fantastic choice. If you are chasing 120+ FPS, I'd suggest an Intel- K CPU, i5 being sufficient. Alternatively if you want a Ryzen proc, wait until the next gen is out ;) The first leaks show that it covers the ground between it and Intel high end on IPC ánd clocks - making it a superior CPU all round.

OP gambles that once they are out of EU £ go to the value I remember when I was a kid so half price. Sure he/she did some thoughts about the price of the components but in my country (and anywhere keeping a £800 budget for a 2600, a decent 2060, a decent x470 and some good 3200 MHz RAM will be difficult. incl WAT or whatever other tax your elected vultures call it ) We have to assume that PSU, monitor, SSD/HDD and so on will be reused.

There will always be someone to tell you to wait for the next new wounder CPU/GPU. Do like I do. Do a little homework. Drink a bottle a "something" and make the order. Just have one regret, well the two times $1000 W3670s and the NXZT 500. Best of luck OP.

Haven't chosen a monitor yet - I have a spare floating about that'll do until I can afford a better one.

Do you really think its worth waiting until Summer 2019. I find if you always wait, theres something always around the corner....

I like this as a plan

For context - and I really should have put this in the original post - i'm looking at iRacing and the occasional Battlefield play.

Future upgrade would be to handle 3 monitors on iRacing - but i'm some way off that.

So you have some future plans then. I would base your CPU choice on that. Given that you're saying 3 monitor setup at some point in near future (within your new build's lifetime? I guess so) and your current budget I think high refresh rate gaming is not realistic in the longer term and if you've got a spare monitor now, it also probably isn't capable of >60hz.

This means Ryzen 2xxx will be optimal given the thread/core count. Is it worth waiting - not specifically for you because the current crop of Ryzen CPUs won't make you miss a thing. The only argument then might be cost. You can bet Ryzen 2xxx is going on sale when the new gen launches.
