Tens years have passed and now I want to play the likes of Battlefield 1 and other games. How does my selection/spec stack up to this need?
Can I cut back on price or should I cut back on spec somewhere to increase spec elsewhere.
I've included the best price for each item, in Euros, so you can get an idea of my budget.

CPU: Intel i5 7600K €205.10
GPU: Sapphire RX 580 (4Gb) €264.90
MB: Gigabyte GA-Z270-Gaming K3 €117.00
RAM: G.Skill F4-3000C15D-8GRK (2x8Gb) €80.50
SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 250Gb €85.30
Monitor: Samsung S24F350FHU (Freesync, yes, only 60Hz) €119.98

Concerning the monitor, should I seriously consider getting a 144Hz screen and for gaming stick with TN or go with one of the other techs?

Cheers,
Tom.

For BF1 I recommend getting a CPU with 8 threads. I actually recommend getting something like that in general for a new build right now.

Aye same here unless it's just an avarage joe machine (in which case four threads). Gaming and some streaming kills four threaded CPUs.

I am happy with a 60hz screen but users of, well, 120hz and up say it is glorious!

Benchmark Scores Faster than yours... I'd bet on it. :)
Id look at a 7700k and a better gpu. If you keep this thing half as long, youll want those threads.

Are you sure about the memory price? I'd say its double that.

I'd also go with Ryzen 1600, it's cheaper and better in the long run.

Good picks. except for the GPU. a GTX 1060 would be a better choice if it's more or less the same price, and it consumes less power

Also, yeah, if you are playing to do some streaming or want a more future proof build, you should look at having 8 threads. Ryzen is better if you are inclined to use more multi-threaded applications and the 7700k if you are more into single-threaded applications.

a 144Hz is a nice experience(TN is cheaper and worth the con) but you'll probably need a GTX 1070+ to do the job. Until then, an IPS Panel 60Hz with a GTX 1060 would do the job

You should probably change that monitor because It uses freesync and I just recommended an Nvidia GPU. also, imo Freesync/G-sync isn't worth it especially at 60hz. I'd rather have FULL locked 60FPS with the gtx 1060 without the sync tech.

Another vote for 8 threads minimum for BF1. The frostbite engine that it is built on is very good at sharing the load across threads.

If you're at maximum budget now then a Ryzen 1600 makes sense. Get a half decent motherboard that supports the higher models and you can drop in an 8c/16T CPU later. Just look into the RAM and make sure it's single rank as Ryzen needs it to run at the higher speeds.

8gb GPU will also last better. I'm slowly playing through Titanfall 2 ATM and that is using nearly 7gb and I'll have to check but sure BF1 uses about 4.5gb at 1440p so you can see how 4gb will limit you soon.

Ok, I've giving this some thought and I've revised my spec as follows:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 1600
GPU: XFX Radeon RX 580 8GB
MB: Gigabyte GA-AX370-Gaming K3
Monitor: Samsung LC24FG73FQUXEN (VA, 144Hz & FreeSync)

As you can see I've switched to an AMD CPU and I've kept the RX 580 but upped it's VRAM. The equivalent Gigabyte Mobo seems decent but that might be open to change if there is something better.
I don't think the Samsung monitor can be beaten at €296.98 and even though I'm paying about €20 more than the 24"/70 I prefer the more upright/slimline stand.

You can downgrade to B350 and won't lose much in the process. Perhaps you can then upgrade to GTX1070 or Vega56 (ldlc has them at MSRP and it ships to Italy aswell https://www.ldlc.com/fiche/PB00234458.html )

There isn't indeed much need for a X370 chipset if u ain't planning on massive storage, crossfire/sli or anyting like that if u planning on a big cpu, single graphics, 16gb of ram and a ssd and a hdd or two a B350 got u covered for a much better price for a better cpu with cooler or gpu.

Good thinking. Indeed I will only be using one GPU, only overclocking the Ram to get it up to spec and I'll only be using three Sata devices (SSD, HD and Optical).
Therefore, I narrowed it down to the following boards, one still being a X370:
Asus Prime X370-Pro
ASUS ROG Strix B350-F Gaming
Gigabyte GA-AB350-Gaming 3

I went through the reviews and the Asus ROG would appear to the one.

There is no point in buying that Intel i5 7600K CPU with a Sapphire RX 580 (4Gb).

Don't forget that if you are buying an intel CPU with a K, it means they no longer give you a factory cooler, because they expect you to overclock a K, and you need to buy a custom cooler for that. So you have to spend like an extra 50 EUR on a half-decent one. So, the cost of your CPU is basically 255 EUR. Which is ridiculous.

I would only think about buying anything better than a 7600 (without a K!) if I wanted an SLI rig for 4k gaming / 144hz gaming with two GTXX 1080s.

I own several builds. I built a fullHD gaming rig for my brother 3 years ago. At its heart there is a 40 EUR AMD 860k processor and a GTX960OC4GB. I played about 100 hours of Battlefield 1 on it (as well as every modern game released before 2017). Ultra settings, 1920*1080, and it runs beautifully.

The VAST MAJORITY of modern games are NOT heavy on the CPU. They hunger for GPU power. With your same budget, I would get a much cheaper CPU and buy a GTX 1060 (while cursing the whole cryptocurrency mining scene for making prices explode!).

Tom.

Solid CPU choice. I built my brother an AMD build with the same processor, a b350 MSI Motherboard, and a 1070 (prior to cryptomining GPU inflation). He games on a 144hz freesync monitor with zero issues playing bf1, PUBG, etc.

I think Ryzen is a better option vs Intel based on the fact that you utilized your system for a decade. Ryzen will allow you to upgrade future zen chips on the same Am4 platform. The upgrade capabilities and platform expansion exist with Ryzen and not with Intel at this time.
