$1000 to Upgrade the System In My Specs

NewEgg gave me a grand more in my credit limit, and with the no payment for a year I wouldn't mind making use of it. The thing is I have to spend $1000 or $900ish with the shipping to bring it to 1000 to be able to take advantage of no payment for a year. Some things to keep in mind are that I play on a 1080p HDTV. So the 9600GT is actually struggling a little at this resolution, but I don't play many graphic intensive games. Also, I play Final Fantasy XI a lot and the nVidia 8 and 9 series have graphical issues in the game. I'm deeply considering a 3870 X2. But that will require a new PSU since I have a rather average Rosewill 550W. Does the 3870 X2 need a 8-pin and 6 pin, or what configuration is it?

I suppose I could upgrade to a 45nm E8400 to OC. I managed to get my E6550 with a 7x multiplier to 444x7 3108 MHZ, if I had the E8400 I could really get a great OC with my mobo. I don't really need any accessories, I have nice speakers...Z-5500's, a nice HDTV as my screen.

Next day shipping doesn't cost much more than 3 day, and since its Wednesday night I'll go with that to get it by Friday, so those 3 things with next day shipping come to $841.68. I could use a new keyboard I suppose. Anyway, I'm more interested in what other people would choose as their upgrades.

I would think the ATi cards would have the same problem. It's the same type of arcitecture.

From what I gather on a few FFXI forum the problem is limited to the GeForce 8 & 9 series, I owned many 8 series cards starting with a GTX and slowly downgrading to GTS then switched to a GT, all of those had the same problem and the 9600 I have in this computer now. Regardless, I need something more powerful for this resolution and for the price I think the 3870 X2 is a decent choice.

800W, good brand, modular. I've never use a modular PSU but I have a clear Acrylic case, so less wires would actually be more physically appealing, I might go with that one.

Credit is fine if used wisely. Just make sure its payed off by the end of the 12 months or they get you all the way back to day one with finance charges. I would pay it off before the 12 months just to be safe though. Have fun!!

4x 6-pin + 1x 6+2-pin PCI-E connectors is too much crowd. You could try the one I use:

ABS-Tagan ITZ-700. At ~$140 this should do more than well. It comes with 1x 6-pin + 1x 6+2pin PCI-E connectors, 4x +12v rails:

700 lmao! using a 3870x2 you better get an 800w or better psu and as for the 6-8 pin your all woried about... 6pin is for regular use and the 8pin is if you intend to o/c... im using a 700w psu 6n8 pin and it shows when tryin to o/c... just waiting for the monster to show up and all be well here.. one more thing... credit is whats messing with the USA!!! NO CASH NO BUY!!! :eek:

Excuse me, 700W for a HD3870 X2 + E8400 + <your OC here> should more than suffice. Since you're using that 125W AMD X2 6400+, maybe it works out for you that way.

You can run a 3870X2 on a 500w if you wanted.. I would recommend atleast 600w tho. 700w is perfectly fine.

now that i took my extra hard drives out, i'm pretty close to 300W power usage at load. it really does get annoying when people spout crap about power usage, doesnt it?

Orbit: not a fan of the ergo keyboards, but the rest looks fine to me.

You could sell that hardware here on the forums - if you sell it off cheaper than normal they go rather quick (average prices dont sell so well, since forum sales are riskier than regular sales)

I love this keyboard, I've used it two times. I have one in the other room right now. I program the buttons to control my music, those two buttons by the split I make for previous and next track. I'm a little worried about selling on the forum myself, I've only used ebay and my PayPal account. What are things I need to know about selling here to protect myself?

paypal. only sell to people been here over 6 months. when people express interest, search for their account in the B/S/T forum to see if there have been complaints or problems.

as for the media, i have a cheap cordless logitech for that - play, pause, previous, next, stop, volume - what more does one need, when it works anywhere in the house?

(oh and the batteries have lasted one month so far, havent had it that long)

I would definately say, new power supply, video card. The CPU you could OC more or no..? restricted multipliers? I'd say grab that 3870X2, I have a power supply I'll be selling soon since I'm upgrading, but if you really want to get brand new from newegg, I recommend thermaltake's PSU's, or CM's. and if you're gonna spend $200 on a new CPU, grab a quad, like a Xeon, or a Q6600..
