I have this card purchased from best buy. Got it the day the prices started skyrocketing before they effected all of best buys supply. They were all that was left as everyone had already been bought out. Luckily got it for 219.99. Sadly I stupidly didn't buy the 6gb version which was only like 239.99 at the time because I wanted to by the text murphy series on steam. Was the Tex Murphy series worth the lesser graphics card... I still can't decide.
Aside from that. I'm trying to figure out two things.
1. Is that warranty likely the true 3 year warranty or the 3 year*1year without registration warranty.(I realize the best buy website says 3 year, but there are two 3 year warranties on the pny site and paraphrasing could be important here.) Also, the pny website lists a generic xlr8 listing with warranty info. It is not specific and I'm consfused if this isn't an older version and if that info applies.
2. If I can't rma it what type of grease or otherwise would I need to fix the fan.
I'm 99% sure it's the ball bearing going out as the fan is slow and makes odd sounds. The problems are:
1. I can't find the box and their warranty requires original packaging from what I've read.
2. I already applied wd40 to the fan an I don't know if that would void the warranty or not.
3. You cannot buy these fans as far as I can tell.
4. I don't know what type of grease is needed or if I can simply use wd40 in place of it. (What I know I have on hand. Might be able to find some other grease around the house. If not have to buy some.)
Is it possible some WD-40 would help soften the existing grease and help it work properly? If not do these fans likely need special types of grease? Not sure how to tell what type of fan this is. I already looked at the fan by removing the little screws and lifted it up but stupidly didn't write down the info on the sticker on the back.(it's basically surface mounted by with a wire attached that need more things removed to completely remove.) I'm assuming from info I've ready replacing it is unlikely for both size/shape and potentially voltage requirements on the card fan controller potentially. So, I'm assuming my best best if I can't warranty it is to regrease it. Also potentially change the two fans around so the one that hasn't almost failed is over the rear section near the back panel(Which I'm assuming from heat readings is the part over the main GPU chip or heat producing area as the temps get to 75c now at, "100%," fan speed. Previously only 52-55c at max load.). Or will a regreased fan do better. I'm not sure what is under fan to now how much it matter. I do know that under the fans is a giant grey ugly heatsink that covers everything. So, the other fan is providing cooling regardless. Just not as much over that part of the gpu. I think both fans can easily be removed and swaped between each other with how they are mounted.
