I have this card purchased from best buy. Got it the day the prices started skyrocketing before they effected all of best buys supply. They were all that was left as everyone had already been bought out. Luckily got it for 219.99. Sadly I stupidly didn't buy the 6gb version which was only like 239.99 at the time because I wanted to by the text murphy series on steam. Was the Tex Murphy series worth the lesser graphics card... I still can't decide.

Aside from that. I'm trying to figure out two things.

1. Is that warranty likely the true 3 year warranty or the 3 year*1year without registration warranty.(I realize the best buy website says 3 year, but there are two 3 year warranties on the pny site and paraphrasing could be important here.) Also, the pny website lists a generic xlr8 listing with warranty info. It is not specific and I'm consfused if this isn't an older version and if that info applies.
2. If I can't rma it what type of grease or otherwise would I need to fix the fan.

I'm 99% sure it's the ball bearing going out as the fan is slow and makes odd sounds. The problems are:

1. I can't find the box and their warranty requires original packaging from what I've read.
2. I already applied wd40 to the fan an I don't know if that would void the warranty or not.
3. You cannot buy these fans as far as I can tell.
4. I don't know what type of grease is needed or if I can simply use wd40 in place of it. (What I know I have on hand. Might be able to find some other grease around the house. If not have to buy some.)

Is it possible some WD-40 would help soften the existing grease and help it work properly? If not do these fans likely need special types of grease? Not sure how to tell what type of fan this is. I already looked at the fan by removing the little screws and lifted it up but stupidly didn't write down the info on the sticker on the back.(it's basically surface mounted by with a wire attached that need more things removed to completely remove.) I'm assuming from info I've ready replacing it is unlikely for both size/shape and potentially voltage requirements on the card fan controller potentially. So, I'm assuming my best best if I can't warranty it is to regrease it. Also potentially change the two fans around so the one that hasn't almost failed is over the rear section near the back panel(Which I'm assuming from heat readings is the part over the main GPU chip or heat producing area as the temps get to 75c now at, "100%," fan speed. Previously only 52-55c at max load.). Or will a regreased fan do better. I'm not sure what is under fan to now how much it matter. I do know that under the fans is a giant grey ugly heatsink that covers everything. So, the other fan is providing cooling regardless. Just not as much over that part of the gpu. I think both fans can easily be removed and swaped between each other with how they are mounted.

IMO a fan shouldn't die in this short a period of time, I'd just send PNY a kind email describing your situation (minus the WD40 activities) and that your expectations are different from a quality product.

See what happens. You may be pleasantly surprised. After all, its just a fan.

True, a good fan shouldn't, how ever depending were the fans kick in they are sitting in higher heat, i see it a catch 22 fan running all the time coursing wear and tear or having the fans sitting in 40+c temps before they kick in.

Fans are fail on my eVGA 1060 too. noticed this with it being colder weather.

Anyways get in touch with Best buy and see what they say, just maybe you can deal with them and get it replaced, other wise get RMA setup with PNY, all so double check with them if you need the original box, but maybe if they the box don't matter hopefuly you have proof of them saying it.

Might be able pick up a box on eBay P.

If PNY dont want to replace the card, I would ask them if they would be willing to send out the fans or a new cooler for it instead so you can fix it yourself. If they still dont want to do that then you can buy fans for all sorts of graphics cards on ebay for around £10 - I have done this a few times myself with a few older cards.

Replacing fans on a cooler should be easy providing you have the right screwdrivers. The downsides are this voids your warranty and the fans come from China so you might have a short wait.

WD 40 is terrible for lubricating anything. It is a better cleaner than a lubricant. WD40 will displace existing oil and then it will evaporate. Don't use WD40 on fans.

What you do is you look at the model number of the fan on the backside (label) and then buy a replacement off of Ali Express or eBay that fits and has the same specification or same model number. Chinese sellers will sell you these fans for only a few dollars though you may wait a month to get it worst case. If you need a fan in the short term and you already disassembled the shroud enough to pull the 80mm or whatever size they are just slap a 120mm fan on it with zip ties and run it off your motherboard's fan header.

Usually the fans that PNY and other graphic card companies use are PowerLogic or Adda.

It is the true 3 year warranty. If you look at their warranties page, and actually go into each warranty, the 1 years that extends to 3 years is for their Verto branded cards. The standard 3 year warranty covers all their GTX10 and GTX20 series graphics cards.

2. If I can't rma it what type of grease or otherwise would I need to fix the fan.

I used 3-in-1 oil from the hardware store to oil fans for years. It works well. However, I switched to just using standard car motor oil(I use 5w-30 semi-synthetic) now and it works even better.

1. I can't find the box and their warranty requires original packaging from what I've read.

They will warranty it without the original packaging as long as you have the original receipt.

2. I already applied wd40 to the fan an I don't know if that would void the warranty or not.

I wouldn't tell them you did that, but as long as it didn't go all over the rest of the card it shouldn't be an issue.

WD40 is not a good lubricant, it is a good solvent though. In your situation, if they won't RMA the card, I would try to use the WD40 to try to clean out as much of the gunk from the fan shaft and from the hole where the shaft goes in the fan. Make sure the WD40 is dry. Then put a very small drop of motor oil on the shaft and slide the shaft back into the fan hub. That will spread the oil all along the shaft and inside the fan hub.

Sewing machine oil or low weight motor oil is what you want. 3 in one is also a lousy lubricant it tends to gum up. I would replace the fans they are probably less than $10.

The problem is finding the fan so he can replace it. I looked around, and I can't find the fan that this card uses anywhere for sale. But if you two had better luck, I'm sure the OP would love to see it.

Super easy I just need to see the label on the back of the fan. Or failing that, the size in MM of the fan. There are tons of VGA fans out there, all these companies use the same brands they are pretty much interchangeable.

I have the same card(well the 6GB version), I've never seen these fans used on any other card other than a few other PNY cards. The OP might be able to find another fan that might work, but I guarantee you won't be able to find this exact fan with the red and white LEDs built into it.

Because you technically have to take the card apart to replace the fans and the average joe doesnt really know how and risks damaging the card if they dont know what they are doing. XFX tried to make me RMA a pair of 6970s because I wanted to do something as simple as replacing their stock thermal paste with some MX-4. Nothing wrong with either of the cards... they just ran very hot with the reference cooler... 80-90'c. While they are still within their thermal limit before they start to throttle. I personally wasnt happy that they ran so hot. explained to them that im an experienced system builder/modder, long standing member of Guru3D/TPU etc etc but they still wanted me to RMA the cards and that would of cost me £20-30 if not more in courier fees and thats just not worth it.

Sewing machine oil or low weight motor oil is what you want. 3 in one is also a lousy lubricant it tends to gum up. I would replace the fans they are probably less than $10.

+1 any lithium based lubricant is also good - I use the same on my bikes and it works fine.

---

The fact that you already have put WD40 on it probably might of voided your warranty but im not sure.. you did remove the cooler yes?

He needs to pop up card open and show me the rear side of the fan hub so I can see what part number it has. As long as he registered that card within the first month or two of purchase, it's one of the few or only GPUs that has a lifetime warranty. That's the great thing about the XLR8

I took out the screws in the base of the cooler and flipped it upside down to look at it. I did not remove the cooler. I just peeked at the bottom of the fan. Didn't write it down though. The fan was still connected by it's wire and everything. These fans mount directly to the shroud itself. I'll look at the back of the fan and see.

these fit the XLR8 1070, they might also fit the 1060, but the only way to be CERTAIN is to open & look at the S/N

As far as I'm aware this is the only GPU that still comes with a lifetime warranty, I sure hope he registered it ,because such a small step covers this thing for its lifetime & is a shame to miss out on

Good luck

Being pny they are typically oem style card so an after market cooler should work, or just find another pny fan set...

He needs to pop up card open and show me the rear side of the fan hub so I can see what part number it has. As long as he registered that card within the first month or two of purchase, it's one of the few or only GPUs that has a lifetime warranty. That's the great thing about the XLR8

Yea exactly. Just give us a picture of the back side of the fan hub, it doesn't look that hard to remove the shroud without even having to remove the heatsink from the circuit board. then you undo the three screws holding one of the fans and give us a photo of the backside. You still have to remove the fans to oil them anyway. To be honest any fan close in size is fine because you can just drill different holes in the plastic to run the screws through. It is not a big deal at all. You can even just remove the shroud, remove both fans, and then zip tie a regular case fan onto it.

+1 any lithium based lubricant is also good - I use the same on my bikes and it works fine.

---

The fact that you already have put WD40 on it probably might of voided your warranty but im not sure.. you did remove the cooler yes?

I once politely asked XFX if I could repaste my 7850 and they said no problem. Still have the card, warranty intact. PNY same deal. He didn't even register it to begin with so he has no warranty to worry about voiding. Also he presumably took the apart already to lubricate it with the WD40, otherwise it is impossible to spray it in to the fan. On every heatsink I've had you can remove the shroud without removing the heatsink from the circuit board. Then it is a simple matter of undoing the screws that hold the fan to the heatsink and lifting it up and taking a picture of the backside of the fan.

Also I gotta give OP respect for buying Tex Murphy, those are some good games.

Good news, bad news. It's an everflow model T128015SH(sep 09 20xx(16?) wd40 took off some of the numbers). But it has a custom screw placement from all the ones you can buy online. So when are these companies going to be sued for making custom things you can't fix? This should defacto be considered malicious intent to stop these practices. This is how sleezy people hide purposeful sabotage to increase profit. It's shouldn't be allowed on it's face. Surprised there aren't laws already. There probably are.

Customizing parts to get in the way of others(to make people dependent, with a standard of the effect and not the intent) for normal sale items and then failure early should result in immediate liability for intent... Then let idiots lease. A sale should be held to immediate accountability since they also burden and waste money of customers as if there was no damage since they have no concept of not having endless hoards of cash. Doesn't that follow under existing standards for professionals. Where are our engineer standards.. Must have went out the window with everything else.

The problem is It's getting louder. And I am not putting up wth being fleeced for packaging cost. I can't put up with this sort of things. I'm sick of this garbage from these companies. It never stops.

Show me pictures of the fan & the shroud please .

even if the mounts arent the same, gluing it will suffice, since atleast one , or 2 of the screw mounts will connect.

It will probably be easier to grease it. I'll find some pics online. I'm not taking it off again.

can't find pics of the fan by itself. I'll look for a video. Does anyone else have a pic. I'm too upset atm to get into it again. Listening to that fan make more and more noise is depressing enough. It's a 3 screw design. It's almost like the normal ones but the top two are squeezed together a little. Plus buying a new one means no more led to see loads etc.. I loose some function of the card.

I also had to take off the very top black shroud part. The screws are cheap and meant to basically auto strip on use. You almost can't avoid it. I may be able to get into it one more time. I had to remove it only because I dropped a screw in it and couldn't find it. I would have to remove them again, if I can, to replace or fix the fan as I need that removed to get past the power cords for the fan.

I think my best bet is to grease the fan and swap them around so the better one is in the other position. I don't know know how long I go before it stops completely.

I have not removed the heatsink. I do not want to deal with that nightmare. I only have arctic silver ceramic heat sink compound and some old mystery paste. I do not want those on my gpu. problem is the shroud is guarded by cheap screws that basically strip on contact if their lovely fans fail.

I was also not aware that not registerying a card voided a warrenty. I thought they simply had a warranty for buying the product... They shouldn't be able to advertise that on websites without saying that. I'm pretty sure that is how most warranties work. Since when do you have to register for quality assurance.... It's there to make up for their errors. They are technically required to do so as a basic part of selling things to anyone.

I once politely asked XFX if I could repaste my 7850 and they said no problem.

I too heard they were quite forgiving when it came to small things like re-pasting or removing the stock cooler to put a waterblock on. From what heard on the internet... So long as you contacted them first to tell them what you were planning to do beforehand so they could update your cards information in their database... Wouldnt budge at all at letting me repaste the cards. Was more interested in getting me to register them than anything else. Told him id be wasting both our times and to close my ticket because Im sending the cards back to the retailer.. Which i didnt do lol... I just waited till the cards were about 2 or 3 years old before repasting it. Knocked 10-15'c off temps with MX-2 or MX-4 at the time.

The quality and level of support differs on region IMO. Some are strict while some dont really care too much so long as you let them know before doing anything.
