1080 Ti FTW3 Voltage question.

Not going into much details just a quick question, How safe is to run a 1080 Ti with 1.20V?

What is the normal voltage? Typically, it is "safe" to lower voltages. By "typically" and "safe", I mean it is not "typical" for electronic devices that are fed lower than expected voltages to overheat, catch fire, or blow up in your face. Some will just fail to run up to speed, or with digital devices, most will just fail to run.

However, if there are voltage regulator circuits involved, as there are with graphics cards, those circuits may be forced to work harder to boost up the voltages to useful values, and that added stress "might" create an "unsafe" scenario.

In my opinion, if you have to ask, it is better to stick with the defaults.

My Evga 1080 Ti FTW3 has the voltage locked at 1.093V and i want to flash it to unlock the voltage to 1.20V

Like anything running out of spec, it can shorten its life. How long, nobody knows... but I expect it to lead a full life especially when kept cool.

I am not worry about the lifespan i couldn't care less not even thinking to keep it long enough, anyway i still have one more question i should use nvflash to extract and save my current bios ( in case i want to Roll it back ) but i have extracted it with GPU-z, will i have any issues if i want to restore the original using nvflash but the Bios was extracted with GPU-Z?

I've got 2 FTW3 DT and am also interested in this. Seems we have similar specs anyhow. I did not know there were BIOSes available for the FTW3 pcb. I thought they were only for reference pcbs. I'd be willing to flash my cards with a 1.2v bios as I have them both under a fullcover block and water. With the stock bios I can game at 2076 (or wherever that bin is in the 2070s, I'll check when I get home) core clock in single card and 2038 core clock when in SLI. Benchmarks I can get another bin or two higher but I don't really count that. I'll be home on the 13th and can start flashing then.

Even though we are talking about very low voltages, that is still almost a 10% increase. I agree that it "should" be fine, but I would still keep tabs on your temps.

That said, I suspect if anything, you will encounter stability issues long before any "safety" issues arise.

its been so long since I flashed... but that seems right. Gpuz doesnt extract it in a proprietary form.

Is it the xoc BIOS with no power limit? If it is, keep in mind that instead of throttling down clocks and volts, it keeps clocks as is, and increase voltage when heat usually would cause it to drop a clock bin. So it tries to combat possible instability at a certain temp/clock level by throwing more volts at it which in turns makes it even hotter. And the evil loop keeps going until it reaches 1.2V. I wouldn't use it with anything less than decent water cooling Also, I have read somewhere that it has looser RAM timings.

Not from Australia. I would call my cooling fairly adequate. 2x 480 rads for a monoblock and 2 gpu blocks should be fine. I ran 2 780TI classifieds back in the day and used the voltage controller to pump quite a bit of voltage into them (Actually caused shutdowns from not enough power from my silverstone 1200w and is why I have the 1300w PSU now). Unfortunately, real world performance wasn't much of a change so after those Classy's I decided not to spend the extra money on them anymore and went with reference 980Tis. Flashed some different BIOSes on them and had some success with increased clocks. I am curious with these 1080TIs as the FTW pcbs are quite heavy duty and with stock volts they really don't get pushed much at all.

In fact it is recommended to use the XOC BIOS just if your card is Watercooled

Ah right right right.

Post 1 in that oc.net thread you posted has the commands for doing it via nvflash.


Do in command prompt:

To turn protection off so you can flash the BIOS.

nvflash64 --protectoff

Then to backup original bios.

nvflash64 --save filename.rom

So far it boots to 2100MHz cant say it is stable even if it doesnt crash while running Heaven Benchmark still the voltage it is not 1.20V
