1155 Xeon's

I got a sabertooth z77 laying around with a i3 3220 on it friend gave it to me a while back.

I need a cooler and some ram recommendations.

Also, was wondering if there is any 1155 xeon capable of overclocking.

Don't remember any 1155 Xeon OC ability besides playing with the baseclock, which won't net much of a gain if any.

Edit... Might be able to set a Xeon to all-core turbo in bios, not sure. Would be worth looking into

I had a 1230v2 it overclocked to 3.5 ghz. It was very good at both undervolting itself and overclocking the ddr3 memory compared to the 3770Ks I tried. The Z77 board would allow +2 multiplier to take it from 3.3 to 3.5.

It's an i7 without the iGPU. Go for it if you think it'll work.

Not a bad deal, just consider it a i7 2600K without IGP. You can probably lock all cores to 4.0 Ghz and possibly add +2 multi to make it 4.2GHz with your Z77. Should be fast enough for modern gaming.

Yeah thats the board. It's worth a shot. I dont see why it wouldnt work. So many chips with variable speeds that are basically identical.

1230 dropped into my Z77X UD3H. Since the 1290 goes for $135 on ebay buy it for $75 and if it doesn't work with your board just sell it.

Guys I need a cooler suggestions that fits this board. It has these dumb armor gimmick around the socket.

It's giving me anxiety trying to judge what will fit.

Looking for preferably something nickel plated with 2-3 fan compatible.

I didnt have to touch the voltage everything is on auto basically. I packed it away till i get the cooler.

Yeah, I played around with bclk and it boots at 106 I believe.

Sweet. You should be able to just raise the multiplier right off the bat. Baseclock isn't the safest way to do it as it overclocks your PCI-E bus and other things. If you can run 106 and a 42x multi you will be at 4452, pretty much an i7 2600k, still great for gaming even in 2017.

edit:

When you overclock the base clock you are overclocking the DMI and PCI-E busses as well, so you might damage or corrupt the devices hooked up to these busses such as your HDDs/SSDs and GPUs on the PCI-E bus.
CPU Frequency=CPU Multiplier X Base Clock
Memory Frequency= Memory Multiplier x Base Clock.

Using some spare 2x2gb 1333 on it currently.

I can sell you some samsung hyk0 "miracle" greens. I have either 1 or 2 kits that I can sell, so either 2 or 4 of the 4GB sticks. I'd want about $40/kit I think. Were you wanting ECC ram instead or just regular DDR3? I'll get some pics of the kit that I know the location of, I think I have another somewhere too. These ram are nice, low profile, 1.35V, overclock well with the right board and CPU. Really stable too.

I'm sure samsung server ram clocks well. Reading on aliexpress lots of russian guys build cheap servers and says most 1600 sticks run at 1866....I get info from all over even obscure post from russians with broken english. lol

I think ECC will be slower. 4x4GB for $60 is a good deal though.

Some updates.I stripped my phenom board out. was able to re-use my cooler and ram.
Although the z77 board says all core turbo...This chip only turbos on 1 core it seems.

Wondering if it's the bios not really supporting this model. The multiplier only goes up to 36 within the bios.
Played around with all the xmp/auto/manual settings. Using last bios as well. IDK if I should try the last few to see if any allow all turbo core to work.

Not really important to squeeze more out of this cpu... Im grateful to have a fast pc now.

My ssd actually runs full speed now it was like half on the amd system and reboots skip the bios its unreal how fast things are now.

...does this mean auto? Or did you set the stock voltage manually and work your way up? Also, your screenshot shows 3.1 ghz. If you say yoy reached 4.2 and want to share, capture a screen with 4.2 and load voltage...

Interesting you can't lock all cores to turbo. Should be possible but must be a bios support issue like you say.
It would be nice to have those multiplier speeds but I don't think it will hold you back in any games, I can barely tell a difference between stock and overclocked on my IVB. Probably matters more if you run a very high refresh rate.

SKT 1155 is no joke, there is a reason it is still one of the best gaming platforms 6 years later You should load some results to HWBOT, no one else has any records for that CPU.

I also went PhenomII to 1155 and it was a huge difference overall.
