1156 vs 1366?

So I'm thinking about building a new Desktop and I was thinking about what socket to get and I got to thinking, what one will most likely be around longer? I know 775 socket was around forever and was nice if you want to just upgrade the CPU. I'm leaning towards the 1156 cause the i5 750 but what socket do you guys think will stick?

That's odd because I have read that 1366 would be phased out in time. I could be wrong but I do recall reading this not to long ago.

Everything gets phased out in time. The 1366 has more chips, 6 core chips planned, for release not too long from now. Considering no 6 core chips will come out for 1156, that means that 1366 is here longer and it performs much better than the 1156. 1156 seems like a second 775 to me with a bit more performance and overclockability. That's just my view on it.

Both platforms will be around for quite awhile. I'm really not sure you can predict this, as the 1366 is considered more of an enthusiast platform, with more higher end chips. 1156 offers less expensive chips that include both dual and quad core. I've owned several chips and boards for both platforms, and I personally prefer running 1366.

Both feel incomplete, having features the other doesn't. 1156 for instance is faster clock for clock than 1366 in single card gaming like with WOW. Where as I'd def. go 1366 for a multi-card setup and a more application heavy workload. I really hope intel doesn't wait too long to make a unified socket... I hate having to do a pro-con list for high-end shit. I'd much rather there be just one option that is best in all areas.

I think a unified socket is a thing of the past now.

So as I see it, It won't matter what one I get cause by the time I upgrade my processor I will need a new motherboard even if its the same socket. So if I got a 1366 socket and wanted a 6 core processor or something like that the motherboard I would have won't work anyways.

Most 1366 motherboards now have a bios update ready for 6 core processors. No worry there. You will not see a 6 core for 1156.

You may want to SERIOUSLY reconsider Gigabyte. I'v'e owned over 20 1366/1156 boards and I've found that short of an EVGA Classified, Gigabyte makes the best boards for these 2 platforms, and it's not even close. As far as a chip goes, you can get an i7 860 for around $200, if you contact a member who lives close to a MicroCenter. We have a thread dedicated to those willing to make purchases from MC.

These are my top 5 (in order) 1366 motherboards that I had personal experience with, though none of the dozen I owned were bad. They just had "quirks".

Affordable six core chips for 1366? I doubt it. Both platforms will be phased out for sandy bridge afaik.

Keep in mind that unlike with 1366 the max recommended vtt for 1156 is 1.21v according to Intel which is quite low. The big deal breaker is the lack of pci-e lanes on P55. In CF or SLI each pci-e slot will only run at PCI-e 2.0 8x speed. I never plan on going cf or sli so I went with 1156 and am pretty pleased so far.

If I want raw power, I snag an i7 860 with 8 threads. If I get tired of the heat that chip puts out, I grab an i5 650 with 4 threads (32nm). If I get a crazy speeding ticket and need to sell some stuff, I grab an i3.

I like playing with different stuff, and I like the flexibility. W1zzard's reviews have shown that even for SLi/Crossfire, dual 16x 2.0 PCI-E lanes are not necessary, and triple-channel memory doesn't have enough of an advantage over dual channel to justify the extra money (and heat since the X58 chipset runs hot, and P55 has no northbridge since it's on chip).

Good post, and I agree with most of what you are saying. However, for me being a benching junkie and all, I never, ever found an 860 that would come close to overclocking as well as a good 920 can on reasonable voltage. That's why I went back to 1366.

It's hard to say how 8x vs 16x pci-e will effect actual gaming performance from just average and minimum framerate numbers. Smoothness can only be felt first hand and in that respect I have heard complaints with higher end cards but I can't say for sure since I have no experience there. I will never go multi-gpu, it's just not worth the hassle imo.

Triple channel does have one advantage. You can get away with having an extra 2GB of ram. Your only choice with 1156 is to fill up all four dimms which will put much more stress on the mch than one triple channel kit on 1366. Add to that the much lower recommended vtt on 1156 and overclocking becomes more difficult.

I'll be using my computer for mild gaming. I like only have one video card as well.
My Asus G51 works for most my gaming but I'm going to sell it and just build me my new desktop.
Being in Phoenix, AZ I like to keep it low in temps.
