Hi,

I'm wondering how a 12 threads cpu works.

I mean, most AAA games uses between 2 and 4 threads, right ?

During this time what the 8 others threads are doing ? are they working on some windows's things in background ?

Benchmark Scores I dont have time for that.
Games that do not support high core counts will use the cores they can to run the game itself. These arent always the same cores and sometimes will even alternate between cores (but still only utilizing 4 for example) this leaves the other cores free to process information in the background. Most of the time the OS is responsible for threading (picking what core is used for what) though sometimes in cases like prime95 and other stress testing software the program has the ability to communicate with a specific core.

Alrignt,

basically, windows choose how many cores and which cores the software will use even if the software was programmed for single thread ?

Yup. Even a single thread is made up of many "tasks", so one task can finish and then the next put on another core. Single-threaded means that the thread needs data from each successive task to continue running, multi-threaded has many independent tasks processed.

Cadaveca, What are you calling task ?

Is a task an instruction ?

I'm still confuse.

Capslockstuck, why you have 6 threads who doesn't do anything ? even if you have many softwares running .

Project Cars only uses the cores (apparently)

Having many threads means i can leave lots of progs or web pages open without impacting on gaming performance.

Tasks/Instructions, it's all roughly the same. Think of this forum thread you've started as a Single Thread. Each posting is an instruction or task. For the most part, people must answer in order, and future posting relies upon previous postings. If that doesn't happen, it gets all jumbled and confused. So, if one answers another who comments on another, and asks a question that another answers, all in a row, the thread flows smoothly to completion.

A Single Threaded program or game is much the same, relying on the completion of previous tasks before moving on.

In my mind, that makes sense as a simplified explanation.

Great example. Process has one heavy (rendering) thread and it maxed out CPU at 25% usage total as expected, but it doesn't make one core at 100% and others at 0%, all cores are active running a single thread. See what happens when you change core affinity for the process.

Simply put, if you have a 12 thread processor and you're running a game only capable of using 4 threads, then, it only uses 4 threads. The rest of the processor will be mostly idle. Of course, that could be put to serious work in the background... generally processors with high thread counts like that are used by professionals running high end software capable of using it. The most common example of a hobbyist use for that kind of power is transcoding or video editing, but even that can become very complicated.
