Does it nowadays matter what bandwidth a GPU has?

My old 8800gt has 256bit, and like a 5770 has 128.

I have two options for now:
NVidia GTS250 @ €35
AMD 5770 @ €60

What should i do?

Go with the 5770.

The energy consumption, performance, and heat generation are all better on the 5770.

That is a misleading spec. An 8800 GT uses GDDR3 memory which is effectively twice as fast as its rated speed. In other words an 8800 GT with 800 MHz memory clock will effectively run at 1600 MHz.

The 5770 and 6770 both use the new GDDR5 memory which doubles instructions throughput to bring the effective clock rate of the memory to 4 times that of its clock rate. Even though the memory bus is cut in half down to 128-bit, the card will effectively have the same bandwidth as a card with the same memory clock rate and a 256-bit bus. In other words, a 5770 with a memory speed of 800 MHz has an effective rate of 3200 MHz but is choked by the 128-bit bus to only 1600 MHz overall.

There is a lot of technically stuff to explain all this, but in the end the 5770 is also like 3 generations newer and would kinda run circles around an 8800 GT. And the Nvidia GTS 200 line has by in large been very disappointing in the performance market in every level.

Good straightforward explanation. Thanks.

All that matters at the end of the day are benchmarks, how much power it uses, how much heat it gives out and how physically big it is.

Late to the party as you already got your answer but check out gpureview.com for quick comparison's between card's, they have an extensive list of card's (and GPU info) past & present and will give you a pretty fair idea of what to expect. They even have an option to apply OC's when comparing card's to give further indication of performance :toast:

Space is not that big an issue (CM 330 Elite). The pc it gets placed in has a 500w PSU.

N/P! Been using that site since '04/'05 and it keep's getting better, considering the amount of card's listed it must be hard to stay on top of them all! I can't say for sure just how accurate the built in OC tool is in providing actual performance but from my experience it has been good enough to keep me coming back each time i consider a GPU upgrade :toast:

8800GT 512Mb has 900Mhz 256bit GDDR3 memory, 1800Mhz effective and computing the bandwidth, (1800Mhz divided by 8bits multiplied by 256bit) = 57,600 MB/sec.

GTS 250 has 1100Mhz 256bit GDDR3 memory, 2200Mhz effective and computing the bandwidth,
(2200Mhz divided by 8bits multiplied by 256bit) = 70,400 MB/sec.

HD 5770/HD 6770 has 1200Mhz 128bit GDDR5 memory, 4800Mhz effective and computing the bandwidth,
(4800Mhz divided by 8bits multiplied by 128bit) = 76,800 MB/sec.

This also includes memory optimizations on a newer architecture, and efficiency of the memory subsystem.

But at the end of the day just like they said, it all goes to specific software performance

Better thermal paste i can do, lapping is a no go atm.
Would be my first, would rather try it out on some old piece of junk.

I have the VF1000LED on the 8800gt the 5770 should be replacing.
Still a no go?

Will do.
I might just go with the flow, just look whether it fits otherwise leave the stock fan on.
That way i have a nice GPU cooler for the FF thread :D

Benchmark Scores P6040 - 3DMark11
I tested the 5770 and the fan is surprisingly silent compared to my 6950. It will also save some power vs. full rpm on the VF1000LED.

I did get an email from a Zalman employee stating that the VF1000LED will fit a Sapphire 5770.

Late to the party as you already got your answer but check out gpureview.com for quick comparison's between card's, they have an extensive list of card's (and GPU info) past & present and will give you a pretty fair idea of what to expect. They even have an option to apply OC's when comparing card's to give further indication of performance :toast:

bookmarked :D and thanks :toast:

Also something to take into account is the architecture which can play big part in video memory management.

For example, I found myself a laptop mobility 4850 gddr5 (not previously known to exist) Thats right, 256 bit gddr5 - should be more powerful than the mobility 5870m with 128 bit gddr5, but a 4860 128 bit gddr5 (also not previously known to exist, and has 4 LEDs on board for some reason) is proving to be much more powerful. I don't know if I can attribute it to the memory management of different architectures yet but there is definitely truth to it.

All that matters at the end of the day are benchmarks, how much power it uses, how much heat it gives out and how physically big it is.

No! It all matters :p

Are we not enthusiasts?!
