Hi. Just bought a new pc with 12900k and it runs hot. 80-90 when gaming and 100 on cinebench20.

Have a msi pro 690z wifi motherboard. I have re-pasted the cpu, I tried to underclock it with me Intel xtu and at -0.100 where the temperature is 90 in cinebench20 i get failure after a while. I also have an aorus waterforce x 360 cooler that should be a great match with the 12900k. Is there something else I can do?

I am not an pc expert by any means so find if you can explain as easy as possible

Checked to make sure cooling plate has contact, everything is plugged in, etc? No plastic on the cooling plate too.

Yes sir! I changed the paste and re mounted the cooler. Everything seems to be fine, but not the temperatures!

Does the pump report RPM and is it moving fluid?

Maybe it's on silent mode or something like that from the BIOS. No matter how good the cooler is if the fans don't ramp up the temps will be high.

EDIT : Also, looking at some reviews 80-90C seems pretty normal for that CPU, I doubt you could ever get below those temps realistically speaking, I don't see anything wrong as long as the clocks stay relatively high.

I have same CPU (though I limited to 5GHz), I am running cooler, and I am on air. Something is wrong with the watercooler.

Why are you a self described novice trying to OC a 12900 k, most enthusiasts wouldn't bother trying to beat Intel's turbo performance because few need more anyway.
And Every review I have read says you're fine as is, that's how they work.

Just run it a stock speeds, @ stock it's already a plenty fast CPU.

I have an i7 12700K, I had no need to overclock it for now.

That's how 12900k works, if you don't power-constrain it: https://www.techpowerup.com/review/intel-core-i9-12900k-alder-lake-12th-gen/21.html

It's all good.

Edit: To be more clear, no matter how good you cooling is, as long as the temp is below 100C, the CPU will be pushed harder.
yeah but not 90°C in games.
my 12700k ran (for a test) at 1.45V and 5.2Ghz all core pulling over 160W in games like forza. and it still was not even above 75°C on a small 120mm air cooler...

i'd say either the mountingpressure is weak or the pump runs at very low RPM.

I haven't overclocked it.. tried to underclock it to get the temps down. Intel xtu is easy to use and since i am a novice i didn't do that in bios. I only want to find out why my cpu gets so warm and throttling under cinebench20 and run hot in games

Maybe something isn't right with your cooler mounting / airflow/ fan speeds..

Just power constrain it and see if temps go down. Setting PL1=PL2=125W should result in lower temps. If it reaches 100C at 125W, then you know you have a cooling issue.

What is PL1 and PL 2 in intel xtu? Is it turbo boost short power max and turbo boost power max?

With the 12900KS, 5.0 GHz, 1.18Vcore, NHD15S, I don't exceed 65C in games. In R23, I see 85C max. I don't have any power constraints set. I think the cooler he is using is defective or it needs to be remounted.

yeah but not 90°C in games.

The op said this was Cinebench R20. 90c makes perfect sense. Once again if the turbo is set to P1=4093w.

If it is anything like the MSi I had, just open the bios and a popup window should ask for which of three settings you wish to use. I believe you are looking for the "box cooler" option.

I don't use bios, i am total novice. Using intel xtu to undervolt. The temperature is in check by undervolting. Only 55° in games but it keeps freeze and crashing even at undervolting only 0.050

It is the only way to set that feature. You could continue using that software if you like, but the only way to learn things is to try them ;)

I also have to assume that software does not set XMP? In other words, you could also be losing out on RAM speed unless you bought a kit that runs at SPD speeds.

Image above is from an older boards BIOS, but you will see something similar going to yours.

The op said this was Cinebench R20. 90c makes perfect sense. Once again if the turbo is set to P1=4093w.
First of all, he said 100C, not 90C. Secondly, 100C does not make perfect sense. I just ran R20 and the highest I saw was 79C momentarily.
