so.. i'm stomped here. my system specs are in my profile. i gave my MSI board to my brother because i didn't like the silver color. i wanted something that looks better in my case. i swapped out the board but everything else is exactly the same. I used the same overclock on Asus crosshair that i had on the MSI board. the computer idles at 60C and when i try something CPU intensive, like cinebench, the temp shoots up to 90+ and the computer crashes to a black screen. the mother board shows error code 8_, which is not even in the manual. manual only defines error code 08.

i tried reseating everything. replacing the thermal paste. adjusted the tension on the cooler, etc. tried everything. no dice.

after messing around with it, i found a ton of people with the same problem. some people can't even boot without an overclock. their systems go straight to error 8_ without getting past the POST.

went to my local microcenter and picked up an ASRock X370 Taichi (the fatal1ty pro is OOS). everything is perfect even at 4050MHz. i was even able to get my RAM to run at 3200MHz.

so what the french toast? is asus shipping duds?

Yes, they are. Hopefully they can rectify things soon with a BIOS update.

Lots of users with varying issues with ASUS X370 Crosshair.

That said, if you have not updated to most recent BIOS, you might want to try that before giving up on the board. I must say though, I LOVE the ASRock Taichi. It just works right, and is cheaper than that ASUS board.

Well, what I found was that early BIOSes, on OC, would show CPU power consumption (I measure this by power drawn over the 8-pin connector) well in excess of 200W, but updated BIOSes show the same settings and same OC with less than 150W. That difference in how these BIOSes work may be the cause of this high temperature reporting... the board may be stuffing too much power down the CPU's throat, and the CPU does not like it, so it barfs a little, coughs and reboots. ;) :p
