I've had this card - MSI RX 5700 XT Evoke edition, for about 2 yrs now, & apart from the first time I installed it, today I got a completely blank screen all whilst gaming in Borderlands 3.
Not sure if its a driver issue or a failing card but after doing a hard system shut down due to no visual control of options when it happened, upon rebooting the display resolution was capped at 1024x768 on my 1440p monitor.
Checking out device manager shows the card was now disabled...
dGPU_crash1 - Copy.jpg

Now the only time I've ever OC this card has been purely through AMD's software adrenalin edition suites. So it has only been a software type of OC at all. No fiddling with bios flashings, hard mods, etc...

I've had crashes before with this card in this particular game but presumed it was because of an over ambitions OC I had on it, restoring defaults stopped the crashes. I've got nearly a hundred hrs up on this game, so a fairly extensive run with an Unreal engine 4 based game. There was one mini map in the game where I had 3 crashes with the 22.5.2 drivers! but the rest of the game was stable after uninstalling them via control panel & reverting back o the 22.5.1 drivers.

Had 22.5.1 drivers running at the time & have even tried 22.5.2 drivers before, but this weird crash is a real eye opener imo. I uninstalled the 22.5.1 drivers & decided to try the 22.6.1 drivers as they are WHQL listed. So far so good, although only about an hour of gaming to test them at default settings in Radeon software suite with gaming profile enabled so far.

This is all under win 10, 21H2

So the real question is, is this because of the Game's code not being optimized in certain maps within the game or is this because of poor coding in the drivers themselves?

The evoke is now revoke it seems... very weird issue.

I'm guessing the card is faulty and certain maps triggers the failure.

Hello
A game or a program wouldn't trigger the OS (windows in our case) to disable the video card.
So, based on the description you provided to us with all the actions you did before it crashed, i would come to the only logic conclusion: faulty card.
But, before you go with the card to a repair shop i would download a WHQL version of drivers that are stable for 5700XT.
Then i would clean up my windows using DDU (remember to do that with network unplugged).
After reinstalling the drivers you just downloaded , you plug in the network and start test it.
IF after this tests will still fail then we have a faulty video card

AMD drivers are shit, suffered a lot with that card, me and so many others. I know, i know, i can't say that, but it's true. DDU would be what i would do, and the using old drivers is a classic with AMD that usually works.

Never had a problem with an AMD driver. I guess one user is not equal to another.
I'd reinstall the driver and try again. Might be a card failure.
Check event log to see if it says anything about what caused the crash.

Thanks, appreciate the response.
So how does anyone know if any version of WHQL drivers are stable for this card. I mean no driver is perfect, ever. The installation of windows is only a few weeks old. Using DDU is overkill imo & that app is meant for when a user changes from Nvidia to AMD or vice versa. Anyone who proclaims using DDU is not trusting AMD, full stop! Then just use Nvidia & suck it up if they have problems, this is what the market gets with only 2 major dGPU vendors for desktops (barring Intel dGPU releases the market is yet to see) I think DDU is over rated. I've used it before but hardly ever. Using windows control panel for uninstallation of apps or drivers has never been a problem for me in many yrs of windows usage.
The 22.5.2 drivers were the first ones to be installed & then this happens.
did you look thru the event logs? Did this happen as you booted windows or did this happen trying to wake from sleep?
I'm not on that machine atm, but will when I get a chance again. It happened during a gaming session.

This sounds to me like a hardware issue, but there's always a chance of it being driver or firmware related. DDU might not be necessary, but uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling them is always a first step. The hard reset function in the Radeon driver installer is likely sufficient. If the card has a BIOS switch, try switching it over - BIOS corruption is rare, but it happens. If neither of those change anything, then it's likely a hardware issue. Is the card still under warranty?

Hello
Well, i am a red side fan. I own like 70+ cards from this producer.
I can confirm that sometimes drivers can be a pain in the a**, but as you mentioned green side is the same.
Let's go back to our problem.
In my experience i noticed that AMD would not change a lot for old cards in new drivers. Except some times a bug repair for some games.
But, i recommend to use an old version of a whql drivers.
On 7th of July will be 3 years since these cards were launched.
As i recommended many times use only drivers made at max 24 months after launch.
Why ? Because in the newer drivers you will not find anything for your model except problems.
and....i suggest this time to use this enterprise driver :

That... Sounds unlikely. If this was due to overheating from bad thermal paste (which really, really shouldn't happen within two years - even dried, crusty decade-old thermal paste typically works, just not well, and shouldn't cause a failure of this magnitude), then the gpu is toast. If it's overheated to the point where Windows disables it, then it is broken, and no amount of new paste will bring it back.

This... as usual with AMD.
i had two full system crashes with the new 22.6.1.
One of my friends on AMD has had his first gaming crashes in ~2 years, he also blames these new drivers are being unstable

I'm voting to rollback drivers one release as well

Hardly a solution

Its a bandage.

Evolve uses the same pcb that sapphire pulse uses.
Disagree, yet you never hear sapphire having the troubles.

I know for a FACT they use the same PCB. Same as the 5700 mech series.

Sapphires Pulse cooler is much better than the Mech/Evolve, no questions there.

For the gold standard troubleshoot of whether that card is faulty or not, grab another SSD / HDD and install Windows on it fresh, patch it and then install the driver and a game or two. If it's still bad, then the card has suffered hardware failure. No need to faff around doing other stuff and getting inconclusive results.

Just make sure all other drives are unplugged when you install Windows, or the installer will fiddle with the boot sectors.
