2060 KO is actually a 2080 Chip?

I was watching a Gamer Nexus video this morning and they did a discussion on the 2060 KO from Evga. They showed the chip is larger than the 2060 chip and is marked as 104. Which is the same designation for the 2080 (Not super). The thought process according to them was that it was either a 2080 chip that could not do ray tracing or run at the full speed of the 2080. I know that this happens but is this not dishonest? I do wonder though that if we can flash the BIOS on that card to a 2070 level. It would be interesting to see.

What, you're new to hardware or what? Silicon gets cut down all the time in order to salvage defective bigger dies. And the days of reactivating disabled units with a BIOS flash (or a pencil) are way behind us. The units have been physically cut for a while.

From what I can tell the 2060 KO is a variant of the TU104. Same size, same number of transistors as the 2080 just that the 2060 KO has fewer Shaders, Tensor Cores and RT cores and the 2060 KO has a smaller Memory Bus Width.

If it was a 2080 that could not do ray tracing then it couldn't be sold as a RTX GPU.

I understand what you are saying. The way I rationalize it would be Vega 64 vs Vega 56 or 2080 vs 2070 which we all know has the same chip but we are looking at a chip that is in a 2080 and there is a different chip for the 2060 but it is still being called the 2060. I guess the KO is enough of a differentiator

The chip is irrelevant. You still get the same amount of shaders, the same architecture and the same clocks. It's nice that they used the "KO", but as far as I'm concerned, you're getting the same thing you got before "KO".

Why din't you read W1zs review... he told that...

EVGA is using NVIDIA's TU104 graphics processor on the RTX 2060 KO. Normally, the RTX 2060 and RTX 2060 Super use the TU106 GPU; here, the same TU104 as on the RTX 2070 Super and RTX 2080 is used.

No extra power either, so not much for overclocking. Kind of like my dual 6 pin 970, no real overclocking to be had. It’s nice that compute stuff gets a boost.

not every 104 is a 2080 chip

but....

tu104 has fewer cuda per sm,8 vs 12

therefore more sms are needed for same cuda count

2060 KO should have more sm than 2060 FE,therefore more RT cores

Not so possibly, I watched the same video and while games perfom as expected, close to a prior 2060 the KO performs /50% better in pro apps, no reason known.

To be honest I did not read the review because I had no intention of buying a 2060.

I read GPU regardless if I am not buying or am. Just information to chew on. Especially like this one, something unusual.

I was occasionally thinking about a 2060 after discounts, but suddenly this got really interesting.
ECGA card is awful (loud). May we see better 2060 KO implementations?

Think of it this way: These RTX 2060s use TU104s that didn't make the cut to become RTX 2080s.

Saves money since you still have a working chip that can meet the performance requirements of a lower price bracket.

Are there any thermal advantages to having the larger die? Not having the same heatsink between comparison makes that kind of thing hard to determine.

The heatsink comes from the 1660... and... yea.... my jaw dropped seeing that.

Those are some seriously thick thermal pads.

I am kinda not surprised... EVGA is kinda comical about their products lately... sadly comical...

Dudes... you should read W1z's reviews more often, he's putting an effort in it...

It's really too bad. They've been going downhill and coasting on their name for some time now. I don't get it. They used to be pretty sweet (or at least, not complete garbage).

Kinda evolve to EDVI at last... From the looks they degrade into ECGA

Kinda evolve to EDVI at last... From the looks they degrade into ECGA

Dude you know that was bad. :slap:

EVGA's FTW and XC models still seem to be good though (independently-controlled fans!). I get around 69°C to 71°C on their 2080 Super for all my current games. This is compared to the potential 85°C to 89°C on a stock blower RX 5700 XT.

I can't say the same for their SC, KO and GAMING models though (No backplate and cheaper VRMs).

I have a place in my heart for EVGA because they paid for my mobo when one of their cards wrecked it by drawing ALL THE 12V IT COULD at once (I mean, really?), and gave me store credit to boot. So I sort of went on a spending spree there.

I mean yeah, they gave me an absolute shit card, but they made it right, and they know that part of customer service at least. Which is why it's sad for me.

There's a thread about this story here, somewhere...

The KO is not a differentiator, every company has a tu104 2060 now and it's a secret to everyone, you will not know u have it unless you check the device ID.

That's interesting, so some 2060's are better than other's at professional applications and it is not just the KO, seam's like a missed opportunity for Nvidia to differentiate a better workplace GPU there.

This Actually puts an interesting slant on the 2080's quick ditching for super's, perhaps their yields were not all that at the start leaving a lot of tu104's that didn't pass muster, Nvidia are very skilled at managing waste.

Zotac has like 3 or 4 tu104 2060s and I want to add them but can't match them
