Hey TechPowerUppers !

I cant decide which 2070S to buy.
Was thinking off Gigabyte gaming OC
But there is maybe something better ? EVGA and Asus are abit too expensive :D
What about other choices ? Maybe Palit JetStream or GameRock ? Or should i stick with gigabyte ?

Benchmark Scores Faster than yours... I'd bet on it. :)
If you're asking, any will do. :)

The best thing is to look up reviews and see how they perform. Most all are close together... but look at cooling performance, both temps and acoustics, etc. You wont find too many differences in the brands, really. ;)

As I rule of thumb I always prefer the quietest and coolest.

And nowadays another soft requirement is an idle fan stop feature. I just love it as the GPU mostly idles unless you run CUDA tasks all the time.

Lastly, make sure it fits in your case.

The overclockability will usually be better on the higher grade cards, since they have a higher power limit, better cooling, better VRM and better memory chips

Go for one with the best (lowest temps), usually something with 3 (some 2) fans.
temps that affect boost limiter kick in at 54*C, so more of a "problem" with air cooled cards),
hence getting the one with the lowest temps under full load, will maximize your boost clocks.

with brands like palit/zotac/gigabyte (windforce) i wouldn't go with their cheaper stuff, they are good value,
but there is a reason why the coolest (and fastest) cards are usually from asus/msi (or the top model from GB),
which have beefier heats sinks.
lower grade coolers are most of the time using smaller and/or less heat pipes (sometimes not even copper), the fins have a matte finish,
when heat sinks on "better" cards (performance) are more of a glossy/shiny metal, and are much higher density.

chips for the top cards are usually heavily binned, so you should also see a bit more oc potential just on the chip itself.
power/vrm etc is most of the time also not an issue on those cards.

on 900/1000 series i saw the highest sustained clocks on the msi gaming cards, switched to water after that,
so no personal experience on the RTX 2xxx air cooled cards.

if you can, check amazon warehouse/microcenter for open box/used cards,
they offer 15/30 day return, and i got some nice cards one and even two models higher than budget would have allowed if getting a new card.
(my water cooled 2080 was open box from amazon, for less than what any air cooled card i was interested in would cost new).

either way, use afterburner to max out sliders for temp/power limits (not voltage),
increase vram clocks until you hit unstable clock, back down 50 MHz,
then use the oc-scanner to scan for oc, apply the curve, which is most of the time very close to max clock the chip can reach,
but is helps using less voltage for anything below max boost clock).

if you go with GB, make sure you get a rev1.0, as all the cards i got being rev1.1 (higher) were coming with lower grade vram and even performed less for avg oc.

Where i can find that information ? rev 1.0 means its an older card ? Gigabyte gaming oc has 2 almost the same cards

rev 1.0 is usually the first batch, so they get good reviews/benchmarks and ppl get interested,
then they switch to lower performing vram (grade/tier), and chips that clock lower (except for top card).
and even if i disregard the drop in oc performance, it has led to issues in the past, where the power "setup" was designed for samsung chips,
and didnt work with the higher power draw/faster ramping up on the lower grade vram they used in v1.1,
so card started to BSOD windows, unless i lowered vram clocks by a couple of MHz..
just enough overall that i personally dont get them anymore for myself, only for others and only if its the lowest price.

they usually listed it in the detailed specs, or their bios/software page for the card, but i guess they decided to stop publishing that info.
makes me even more looking at other brands.

their gaming version seems to have the same (cheaper) heat sink as the windforce.
i would get the evgas (same price) or if close, msi gaming (any), asus strix, zotac amp.

@Chomiq
still doesnt mean anything.
going by specs and pics those are identical, even for clocks.
so unless GB posted the wrong pics (and 2 vs 3 fan cooler), they are the same.

different cooler = different sku. You can see the numbers are different.

oh sure they are different skus, but that doesnt mean its actually different performing hw under the cooler (chip/vram/power).
same amount of heat pipes/type of fans/amount of fans etc, the only difference is fan shroud size and a different exhaust panel.
doubt there is any real difference in perf, as the heat sinks arent the "better" grade used on the top models.

i think its partially to sell a card with "gaming" and have more models just by switching out the exhaust cover.
unless they using them to bin chips even more.

I didn't know performance was part of the talking points. Those are the same if they have the same clocks. The difference is in the cooler and perhaps the VRMs (I don't know).
