As the title suggests, I am looking for a GPU to game on the resolution of 3440x1440 (34''). Considering my budget, I was looking at the R9 390X (330 EUR) which performs well, but it is quite inefficient.

The RX 480 is priced lower, but it is outperformed by the 390X. At the moment, the GTX 1070 (~500 EUR) is too expensive, so that leaves the GTX 1060 (~300 EUR). Will that card be enough to power the resolution?

With a GTX 1060 you just can't play your latest AAA games 1440@60fps.

If you want 60fps in most games @1440p you'll need a GTX 1070.

Why people buy gigantic super high end resolution monitors and then get all confused when nothing can be run on a budget through that? If you want to game on GTX 1060, R9 390X or RX 480 you need a 1080p monitor. Only this way you can run them at decent framerate with a mid end graphic card. That's why I had 1280x1024 when everyone was on 1080p and I'm now on 1080p when most has gone to 1440p or even 4K. You have compute power in reserve. If you have screen like you do, no matter what you buy, it'll be starved from the moment you'll buy a graphic card (unless it'll be a Fury X, GTX 1070 or GTX 1080). You can decrease details, but I personally can't ever accept that. I rather have lower resolution and everything cranked up than uber resolution and crappy textures and effects.

I can agree with your argument, but at the moment I am mostly playing Overwatch, so the graphics do not matter that much and the resolution does for me. I might opt with the GTX 1060 now and by the time newer AAA games come out, I will probably have saved enough money to upgrade!

You'll have to decrease details. Or simply use lower resolution and use scaling to stretch the image to full screen. This is easier to do on really high resolution screens where pixels are tiny. Or decrease details.
