Small video cards <3

Anyone else have a problem with how huge video cards from this new generation are? Ever since I saw the R9 nano I am basically spoiled.
I can't wait for HBM2 + pci express 4. Small video cards + no power connectors sounds really cool.
That's gonna be my next major purchase....either a small video card more powerful than gtx 1080 or a huge amoled screen, whichever comes first.

The some of the GTX 750 Ti and 950 cards didn't need additional power. They were also stuck at about 75w.

I'm still trying to order GTX1060 in ITX version.
There are none in my country, so I have to jump through hoops to get it from US retailer.
I plan to continue 1080p gaming for as long as it takes for 4K to make sense, so this card will be perfect.
EVGA GTX1060 ACX 2.0 is currently $199, but it's on the backorder status right now. Zotac also fell to the exact same price point (previously $259)
I can deal with a single 6-pin power connector, since my PC has no windows, and wiring is already a mess.

Regarding your dream of GTX1080 equivalent in ITX form factor and no power connector: just wait for the next generation of hardware. PCI-E 4.0 is on the way, HMB2 for masses is not too far either.

my gtx 970 without backplate is completely bent after less than two years. Smaller cards would be nice or always include a backplate for bigger ones.

Support it with GPU stand. I think Powercolor sells GPU jacks, but you can always made one by yourself it you are creative.

I am aware about differences, but what I care about the most is that it fits my needs and budget. The most demanding game in my library is Alien Isolation, so if it can play this game on max settings - I'm OK with it. Pretty sure Fallout 4 won't be a problem either.

A 6GB version also sounds appealing, but it is always out of stock, and overall cost of an ITX version (Zotac, EVGA) plummeted from $260 to over $330!

Gigabyte Windforce is cheap and in stock, but it is way too big for my case (275mm vs 240mm max)

Because they have small screw holes in the end which can be used for a support brace.

The naming scheme sucks and it is kind of deceiving, but overall a 3GB version is in the worst case 15% slower comparing to 6GB version (@1080p) and costs a lot less. If we are talking ITX, it will be $300 or more vs $200 or less at today's prices.
BTW, it is not as bad as GT730 model lineup (3 base models, infinite variations).

You say physics....I say ram chips. That is the issue HBM will sort out, stacks them all together nicely.
Also less pcb = more cost...hmm...I believe its convenience tax atm.

Yes, the RAM with all those hundreds of discrete address lines requiring dedicated traces will take more room, so yes, it's still physics.
Sure, HBM can make for a more compact form factor, but it's currently more expensive to manufacture and these companies will save a few cents on a connector if they can. Also, a smaller PCB will require more layers and thus cost more, too.
If they do make such cards, then you can be sure that they'll charge a significant premium for them to get over these costs and the market is likely to be small, which is why you don't see them in the market. Those AMD cards are the exceptions at the moment.

That's a GTX1060. Granted, it's still 2 slots but that's full 1080p that fits on your palm. If they just did away with those 2 extra DPs this could've been a terrific single slot card.

Not all, just the selected few. Those cases are relatively big for the purpose of saving space.
It seems like in the pursuit of reducing the overall case volume, manufacturers forget about the desk footprint.
My Lian Li Q11B takes up more desk space than a no-name uATX SFF case I had earlier.
My brother's Bitfenix Prodigy can house a 330mm GPU, but it looks almost as big as my old Chieftec Dragon mid-tower.
I like the newer desktop/HTPC cases with horizontal GPU mounts, but those aren't that small either. Only makes sense with a vertical stand (like Node 202), or under the monitor (the IBM PC style).

Haven't seen a single slot card in years. I just don't see them making a comeback, especially now that better cooling yields more mhz and thus more performance.

That cooler looks like the same one that many GTX 460's came with. It had to be dual slot to clear heat the sink and fan. I think I had 4 Zodac's and 2 EVGA's

It should work fine on a 1060 and EVGA is also using that cooler on their small cards. It will vent into the case though. That is something you have think about.
