Hi I have just downloaded the Skyrim special edition through Steam now I have two editions, I was playing the ordinary Skyrim for the 6th or 7th time so can I use my saved games from the ordinary Skyrim on the Skyrim special edition or will I have to start from the beginning again.

Nevermind. Since you own both games, why don't you just try it? Anyways, I believe saves from unmodded, original Skyrim will work with the new one.

There's an article on PC Gamer that says Bethesda has said that your save game files will work with the Special Edition but won't work if you have modded the game and made saves which probably most of us have done. I can't link to PC Gamer at work right now but the article is on their front page.

There was a tool fixing the save file, I I remember correctly. Clean out the mod rubbish.

Why not install and load up the original game unmodded. Create a new save file (without mods) then port that file over to the new edition, then uninstall the original. win?

Because the mod content that improves the game wont be present,and the graphics mods already have it, in many cases, better than this improved graphics version can probably look.

How does that matter? If you reinstall your original save file via cloud or backup on your pc; It will work even without mods as I have done that. I'm going to test it right now. My last save file in skyrim was heavily modified. Let us see how it works...

I'm referring to just bringing your saved GAME content over from your original skyrim game to the new game without having to start over.

OK I just tested this out. My original skyrim was heavily modified and I had kept my saves files from back in 2014. I now just loaded up the new game and saved. then I shut it down, installed my save files from 2014 and loaded the game back up. I'm now playing the re-mastered version with my old 2014 save files. It did tell me that this huge list of mods would no longer work but otherwise let me load right up where I left of in 2014.

Works.

Just tried too.

Slapped few mods. Not enough yet. But it works better. Under the hood changes are noticable.

And whatever with the saves... new game and rock on again.

Nexus servers are currently overloaded anyway. There is a mod manager.

There are plenty of youtube guides about it.
