Video conversion software

Other than Handbrake, what's a good and simple video conversion program to use? Right now, I am using FormatFactory. I like it because its simple to use and has a whole slew of presets. The only down side is, it's kind of slow when converting multiple files.

FormatFactory does have an option to use multiple threads, however, I have a quad-core without HT. With that being said, I may have threads and cores mixed up. By the way, most of the files that I convert are from flv to mp4 480p.

About two years ago, I tried a program called Freemake video converter, and after installing the program, all of my videos became unrecognizable. I had to spend about a month converting all my movies over again—it may have been a codec issue.

Handbrake is hands down the best one, not really comparable to others really, it hands down has the best quality per bit rate because it uses the CPU fully for it, though you can enable OpenCL assistance.

You can make a video way smaller with Handbrake and still retain 99% of the original information and quality, whilst cutting a huge chunk in file size, perfect for YT uploads.

Not needed to use it recently as i have been doing straight renders out of Sony Vegas, but this video below you may not believe is only 200MB for a 720P 60FPS video.

60FPS being very key because you need a double higher bit rate vs 30FPS to maintain quality.

As far as converting one format to another I just use VLC media player it's fast it's easy it uses GPU acceleration and it works and it's free

What are you looking for that Handbrake doesn't do? MEGUI is not as simple as Handbrake (it becomes simple after a while, there's a learning curve) but it's much more powerful software.

To covert videos from flash to mp4 with quick results and low file size. Let's say for example a video is 220 mb; I don't want to final product to be 400-600 mb in size

Have you ever tried VLC media player? I hate to sound redundant but in case you missed my post or maybe you've already tried it I don't know but the end result is a much smaller file size and it surprisingly effective. I would definitely assume that handbrake has much more functionality though

you do realize that handbrake isn't using any proprietary or unique video conversion methods?

Handbrake is basically just a front end to the actual video codecs to provide easy conversion. It's simple to add additional codecs that you would like to use.

Other applications are going to do exactly the same, the only difference is that the applications will likely be riddled with ads, possibly spyware depending on which ones you use, and are going to use the same codecs with a simply more aggressive, default profile for encoding.

If your files are too big you're just using the wrong settings.

As far as front-ends are concerned, it's pretty much Handbrake for simplicity and MeGUI for advanced settings.

Are you converting FLVs from YouTube or something? You can probably just move the streams to a MP4 container rather than re/trans-coding it.

I use a FireFox add-on to download the videos from YouTube. I'm left with a FLV, so I use FormatFactory to convert to AVC h264 and the container I choose is MP4. The completed video file size is relatively the same

Quality, speed, file size, pick two. This is the first rule of encoding.

If that's what you're doing, why not just use something like the FlashGot add-on for FireFox to directly download the MP4 versions of YouTube videos? No need to muck with conversions. Though the 1080p MP4s don't include the audio steam, so you'd need to grab that separately and join them.

^ this. I use freedownload manager and just grab the MP4's as they originally are, and use handbrake to convert to HEVC/H265

DVD FAB will do it all for you and so much more, the best one I have ever used. It supports up to I think 32 cores? I know it works with 12 Cores and also CUDA.

I use DVDVideoSoft Free Studio to rip videos from YouTube, that said I bought a lifetime license back when they cost almost nothing.

For conversion I use XMedia Recode, its basically Handbrake but less pretty, and arranges things ever so slightly differently, but gives you wider control over video container.
