Athlon II X2 270 -> FX 6300 - keep the current Athlon stock cooler?

Hello community, I'm upgrading my friend's computer for cheap (so he can play newer games, no matter the details and settings) and I'm buying a FX 6300 for his mobo. Currently he has an ancient Athlon II X2 270 so I'm asking if we can keep his current stock cooler and if it's capable of cooling NON-OC'ed FX processor. With the stock one he currently reaches ~62°C in the most demanding Small-FFTs torture test in Prime95. Thank you for all advices!

If it isn't getting too hot, it will be fine. The stock cooler included with the cheap AMD processors has been just about the same for generations, so chances are the stock FX6300 cooler is almost the same as the stock Athlon II x2 cooler.

The FX series coolers are better than the Athlon ones.

Thank you, well, if there's a chance that the temp of 6300 doesn't pass 80-85°C in the same torture test I would be happy as that's unreal CPU stress that won't be reached in gaming... what about that?

You can't damage a processor by simply using it. Moreover, the "operating temperature" value is quite useless.

Yeah, you go with that theory. :banghead:

Okay, to correct it from that non-planned offensive state, as long as I'm checking the temperatures the CPU is fine. It's a sure thing that if the temps go high I'll replace the cooler. I'm just asking you if it's possible that I won't have to replace it.

Actually that's true , it is near impossible to kill your CPU under normal circumstances with just heat and no extra voltage unless you disable temperature protection in the BIOS. Also the temperatures FX CPU's report aren't coming directly from a sensor.

On the topic : My stock 6300 was getting very hot (72c on package) with it's stock cooler , however it never throttled keeping in mind the supposed temp limit AMD officially states is 62c so the temps you see don't tell you a whole lot. So I suppose best course of action is to make sure temperature protection is enabled and simply watch out for any throttling , if you see any time to change the cooler. Problem with this is that as far as I know most motherboards read the socket temperature instead of package aka actual CPU temp.

To be fair I would just pick a cheap aftermarket cooler with a non-minuscule sized heatsink and not worry about running it borderline safe.

Thanks for a complete reply.
Thanks for your (although quite negative) experience, I'll keep that in mind. Of course I will keep my temp protection on and check the temps; if they go wrong and cleaning the heatsink won't help I'm planning to buy something like this which seems to be the best cheap cooler (for 15-17$ in my country). Still I hope the stock one will do the job though (for the sake of my friend and his tight budget).

Yeah that cooler is way better that the stock one. Also the stock one sounds like a hair dryer. That one wont if this matters.

VRM will throttle on that board, no matter what cooler you use on the processor.
Board is totally sub standard for 6 and 8 core FX's.

Although I agree a 8xxx is a no go on that board the 6300 should run with no problem at stock.I have seen this combo before.

Okay, thank you kindly for all your answers guys! Big thanks for confirming that non-oc'ed FX works with that mobo @Vya Domus, thanks @newtekie1 for helping with the cooler. I'll try it with the stock one and I'll send you experiences afterwards so someone in the future can benefit from that.
Have a nice day geeks!

Okay, just so someone can benefit from this thread:
I did it, changed the CPU and put the cooler, tried Prime95 - temps were 80°C (max possible) and CPU was throttling.
Disassemblied it again, applied a thermal paste and temps gone down to 59°C (after 15-20 minutes of load).
Result: very successful if you ask me :) again wish you all a nice day!
