Hi guys,

I've now been rocking an i7 4790K for the past couple of years and always had temperature issues with it. I've got a Dark Rock Pro 3 mounted on it (already tried to unmount/remount it 4-5 times applying new thermal paste without results) and i get about 50-85°C on the cores under load (screenshot linked). The thing is as you can see i bottlenecked the chip to 4GHZ at 1,13V which seems crazy low to me but i still get those high temps.

So my question is, now that i have access to a 3D printer, should i try to print a 3D delidder tool and delid it ? I'm kinda out of options honestly and starting to give up...

Motherboard: Asus Ranger VII (disabled xmp profile, set core/cache voltage to manual, ...)

Thank you for your responses already :)

The Vcore displayed is the OCCT one, not the "real" Vcore. Cpu-Z shows up with 1.125V.

Thanks, I filled up my specs, you guys should be able to see it now.

Edit: Btw, I don't see how changing the cooler can help, as this one should clearly be able to support an 88W I7 4790K compared to the "Up to 250W thermal dissipation" of the Dark Rock Pro 3

Your vcore is reading 1.5+ volts.

I'd have to check but I think that's for the FIVR and not the actual CPU cores. Though that's pretty low if that's the case as I run 1.65 and that's considered low. Many run up to 2.0V for OCing with really good cooling.

Better to use HWMonitor, Open Hardware Monitor or Aida64 for voltages on Haswell IMHO.

I'll check my OCCT values when I get home.

@Gae62 What are you doing stress test wise to confirm load temps? OCCT? Games?

Are you running AVX tests? If so those will make your CPU run hotter as it overvolts under AVX loads beyond what your voltage is set at.

85C is fine on Haswell and Devils Canyon. They can run up to 100C thermal limit and not die. Not that you want to find out I'm sure.

Can you screenshot your UEFI OC settings? Usually pressing the F12 key in EFI takes screenshots and saves them to C:. The MB user manual should specify.

You could delid. I did on my good 4790K and got even better temps than I was on air. Still gotta do the one in my home server...at all stock under a CM 212EVO it still hits 85C. It runs around 1.22V at non-AVX tho.

Thank you for your responses guy ! I'm mostly playing but i got those temps on OCCT, it really isn't the 85°C temp that's bothering me, but the 30~°C difference between core #1 & #4 ... Plus I believe that those are high temps for a chip running @1.125V.

Here are the results with prime95 and Open Hardware Monitor. I'll post the Bios settings tomorrow.

Reset the cooler, thermal paste refresh, delid.

I'll try to reset the cooler one last time, just to be sure but as I said, I believe it's hopeless.

@Kursah how much temps did you get from delidding ?

What is your case cooling like? If not pushing enough cool air through the case, you may be fighting lost cause. Adding another case fan to increase desired front-to-back flow may help. Alternatively, you may need to go to a radiator setup the draws cool air directly from outside the case instead of a conventional CPU cooler that uses internal air.

What are your ambient (room) temps?

Thank you for your reply @Bill_Bright !
Case cooling is the basic setup of the H440, that is 3 intake fan for 1 outake with the 3 intakes running constantly on 7V while the rest of them is controlled by the motherboard. Ambiant room temp is about 20°C, and i'd agree with you on the airflow but it's cool air that's coming on the back of the case, meaning the radiator is still pretty chill :(

Then if me, if you have not already, I would make sure all clocks and voltage are reset to default settings. If temps are still too high, run the Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool. If it fails, maybe you can sweet talk Intel to RMA you a new one.

Ambient temps have alot to do with a chip running cool.

Same temperature issue I had with my 4790K, ended up de-lidding, and replacing the Intel TIM for liquid gallium on the bare die. Heatspreader is being clamped down by the sliding lock/lever for the socket.

bottlenecked
Correction to your post that is referred to under voltage or it maybe the stock voltage for your 4790K. Mine defaults to 1.15 mV for stock clocks.
Your vcore is reading 1.5+ volts.
OCCT does show the VID @ 1.13 though.
I'll try to reset the cooler one last time, just to be sure but as I said, I believe it's hopeless.
I gave up on removing the cooler, and replacing the TIM numerous times way back when I first got my 4790K.

4.2Ghz@1.2-1.25 is better :D and I can't go past 1.13 else i get 87°C+ with my dark rock pro 3 running at 100% fan speed

@biffzinker yes sorry i mean undervolted, but what are your before/after temps before you delidded ?

Btw my chip flies away next tuesday, which me luck :) I'll keep you guys updated

another vote for delid, liquid metal TIM, relid and happiness. lost over 20C (i genuinely forget the exact amount, but it was a huge number) delidding my 3770k, and there wasnt drastic changes from 3xxx to 4xxx regarding the TIM

Some just had a shitty factory TIM, mine had one core run around 10C hotter than the rest at all times til i delidded.

Before temperatures were 80-90c with a CoolerMaster 212+ EVO when stress testing with AIDA64. Was running into thermal throttling just trying to get all cores at 4.4 GHz at 1.17v. Even tried using a CoolerMaster Hyper 612 no difference for temperatures. Gave up used a vice clamp with a wooden 2x4 to remove the heatspreader.

Now I can manage to overclock to 4.6-4.7 without the temperature going into the thermal throttling range. If I run 4.7 GHz @ 1.273v temps are around 80-85c, I was messing with 4.8 GHz but it requires 1.31V which causes temps to go up to 90c.

Edit: I tried changing the orientation of the Hyper 612 to line up with the die under the heatspreader still didn't cause a significant temperature drop.

Wow that's some pretty good results  Hopefully the new chip will be better, else i'm 6 months away from the end of my warranty so I'll just end up delidding it if temps are bad :)

If I can get 4.2Ghz at 60-70°C I'd be more than happy ! I'll push it further if I can

Wow I'm not so sure xD getting it to 1.118 ~ would make 4Ghz unstable. We'll see what I get from that sweet RMA

80c under high fpu stress isn't that hot >_>
OCCT uses AVX unless you run it explicitly without it

It is odd as the OS should be leveling the load a bit better. But not all apps can take advantage of multiple cores so I have seen wide spreads before. Still, 82°C is too high, regardless, IMO - especially if it sits up there for extended periods. As suggested, an improperly mounted cooler could cause, this. Or an uneven application of TIM.

I've read with a 7700k you can cool it down just by setting the IGP voltage to zero in the BIOS. You have to have a MB that offers that option, but if so, it might work on your 4790 as well.
