Family multiplayer game?

No shooting or racing, more like board game that two or more people can play against each other? NO MONOPOPLY we all hate dreaded hours of bored to death games. thnx in advance.

Board games! Caverna, Carcassonne and Kingdom Builder are a few pretty friendly games. I've been dying to try Dune too, when the family is ready for some light hearted back stabbing (you have to make the game yourself though unless you want to splurge a few hundred $$$ on it). Settlers of Catan and Ticket to Ride are pretty fun too. All of these games get more fun the more players you have, though Kingdom Builder and Carcassonne work pretty well with two people. I have not played Carcassonne with only two, but I can imagine it can be pretty decent.

As for multiplayer games, Heroes of Might and Magic 3 springs to mind, always. Or take over the galaxy together in Stellaris, and make the lesser spieces you encounter delicious so they provide more food when you slaughter them, and yes you can do that (with the Utopia expansion).

EDIT: Seriously though, for pure family games Caverna is nice. Depends on the ages of the players though. You play as dwarfs, making a home in the mountains. Look into coop games as well.

Another way is roleplaying. Marvel Super Heroes can actually be quite fun.

EDIT Again: The Civilization board game was surpsrisingly fun too, even with only two players.

Also, I'm looking at board games at Amazon and holy cow they're expensive. Where do americans buy board games?

EDIT UNCUT: A quick look at boardgameprices.com tells me that OMG, are board games really more expensive in the US than in Sweden?

Rocket League? It's not really racing but there are cars and it's pretty easy to pickup/understand if you're familiar with games.

Also Golf With Your Friends. Fun multiplayer mini golf with a lot of variations and mods to make it crazy and different.

If you had a PS3, I would definitely suggest Little Big Planet.
When I still had a console, that was a to-go coop game for any occasion, be it a drunken party with coworkers, weekend visit from a brother with his GF, or neighbors with their kids stopping by...
I don't think there is an equivalent, or even something slightly similar on PC.

Or forget about videogames and start a DnD campaign with handcrafted props! That's gonna kill helluva lot of time
