Hello folks, i'm interrested in buying a new gaming laptop, i'm confused between the "Lenovo legion y520 with the gtx1050(4Gb not the Ti version) " and the "hp omen 17 w-216ng with gtx1070", both have a i7 7700 HQ (ram and ssd are the same).
Basically, i'm gonna use the laptop only for gaming (no rendering or movie editing) so my question is, should I go for the hp omen or stick to the lenovo y520 and save the money as i'm currently a student and I don't have a stable income (the difference is between 600 and 700 €).. Would the lenovo y520 handle most games on High graphics within the next 4 years?
Give me advise please. Thank you

I wouldn't buy an HP laptop. Poor build quality and bloatwear

For gaming build a desktop

Be careful not to be fooled by laptops with 1070s and other higher end cards. Although they have the same specs as the desktop counterparts they DO NOT necessarily run just as fast ( as in clock speeds ).

I have heard of laptops with 1070s that perform almost identically to laptops with 1060s due to poor thermals.

Guys i'm not interested in the desktops, what I want to know is if the difference between the two laptops mentioned is that big (gaming performance), what do you think about the PERF/$ of both laptops?
In my country, Gtx 1060 is only available in 4k display (laptop) or in overpriced laptops like Predator. They are far more expensive that the hp omen 17 w-216ng.

Benchmark Scores Faster than yours... I'd bet on it. :)
T

I need it as a laptop as I travel frequently, is gtx1050 really that bad in gaming?
At 1080p...id say yes, its that bad. It will play modern games, but many titles wont be played on ultra/high. Is it a legit 1050 or mobile version of 1050? If its mobile, its even slower.

Take the laptop with the 1070. Still though, people here know what we're talking about. I've had two laptops with "mid range" GPUs. Both under performed vs comparable desktop setups. Worst of all they developed heating problems and rendered near useless within 3 years. At least when your cooling or components fail in a desktop you can change them out. Go to pcpartpicker.com and look at some budget builds they have featured there. You won't regret it!

I'd get this in all honesty: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod...re=GTX_1060_laptop-_-1TS-001A-00487-_-Product

It's actually on Amazon for $35 less than that as well: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LXO0PO2/?tag=tec06d-20

Out of your first two choices, GTX 1070 is far better than a GTX 1050, night and day difference. 1060 though is much closer to a 1070 in performance, while being closer to a 1050 in price.

EDIT: Just read your post about the 1060 not being widely available in your country. If that's the case then the 1070 might be your best option, but at least based on what's available in the US, the laptop I linked is what I'd get, not sure what the same model would cost you, or if it'd even be purchasable where you are though.

Based on personal experience the two brands I'd usually try and purchase would be either ASUS or MSI. They make quality laptops that are typically well-cooled, and they don't cost an arm and a leg like Alienware, Origin, etc.

I'd also avoid a Lenovo laptop. Their hinges are terrible. Very common part to go bad on them. I owned a Lenovo laptop that had the hinge break, after it broke I researched and found out that it was actually a super common issue with their laptops.

I actually have an ancient Core 2 Duo Penryn HP laptop that still works despite being 9 years old. I'd actually trust HP over Lenovo as far as build quality is concerned.

the acer predator helios(spelled) has a 1060, I am waiting for my Acer Predator with a 1070 to arrive. If you must choose between the 2 you listed take the HP Omen with 1070. As said before ASUS and MSI have good products too. My ROG VW75 is still going strong despite being 5yrs old and sporting a gtx660m.

What about a normal cheaper notebook and use an external GPU via m.2 or mini PCI-Express?

Here's a brief comparison of 1050, 1070, and everything in between:

Each videocard has two number's listed, it is their respective fps on high, and on ultra, both at 1080P.

Playerunknown's Battlegrounds:
1050: 34/24
1050 TI: 45/untested
1060: 78/53
1070: 90/75

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III:
1050: 23/20
1050 TI: 30/26
1060: 45/40
1070: 65/59

Mass Effect: Andromeda
1050: 26/22
1050 TI: 32/27
1060: 61/55
1070: 78/70

Ghost Recon Wildlands
1050: 34/11
1050 TI: 42/18
1060: 71/40
1070: 88/52

1070 is averaging 26% more fps than the 1060 on high settings, 1060 is averaging 118% higher fps than the 1050. I don't even consider a 1050 to be a budget choice, it just seems like a complete waste of money given its gigantic inferiority compared to a 1060. 1070 is pushing out 175% more fps than a 1050.
