Hi,

I've currently got a GTX 970 and need a new monitor. I'd like to get a 24 inch 1080p 144hz monitor, but I'm unsure if I need to pay the extra for a G-Sync monitor (it adds £200+). I plan on upgrading my graphics card to a 1070 in the next 6 months and I'm a bit confused.

1) Will my 970 run well with a 144hz monitor.
2) I'm playing PUBG right now and get 60-90 FPS. If I'm not getting 144 fps, will it still be an improvement from my 60hz monitor?
3) When I get the 1070, will it cause screen tearing without having G-Sync?
4) Do you have any monitor suggestions or monitors to steer clear of?

Thanks in advance!

If you plan on buying that 1070, you could get a 1440p G-Sync monitor if you can find a good deal.
A while ago I bought a Dell S2417DG 165Hz G-Sync monitor for just 399 Euros!!

Personally I wouldn't want a monitor without G-Sync anymore.
I know some other people here are against G-Sync because of the premium price but if you can find a good deal, why not.

Thank you, I appreciate the input. I'm concerned my 970 won't be able to support a monitor of that resolution and hz. Might be a rough couple of months until I get the 1070 :)

In that case I would wait.
Or you could choose to stick with 1080p but that's something you have to decide.
I wanted 1440p not only for gaming but also for the extra desktop real-estate.
G-Sync high Hz monitor is a much better gaming experience than a 60Hz monitor IMO.
G-Sync not only for 60+ fps but it's also a good thing when your fps drop below 60.

1440p + 970 = you might struggle
1080p + 970 = you'll be ok
1440p@60hz + 970 = you'll mostly be ok. Though you might need to dial down some settings to keep your 970 from going over the 3.5gb memory buffer limit.

The whole 970 being 3.5gb was reason enough for me to upgrade. It'll run 1440p@60hz but some games it will start to tank

You will see improvements in smoothness, I wouldn't use PUBG as your basis for FPS as that game is terribly optimized, even gtx1080ti's can't do 144fps consistently on it. I have gtx1080 + 1440p 165hz monitor and topping 100fps is hit and miss.

Terribly optimized? It’s an open world game with 8 square km. map and 100 players on it. Game can utilise 6 cores and performance scales up very nicely as you overclock CPU. Same goes for graphics cards.
Try other similar games such as Arma, Ark Survival etc ;) PUBG is a masterpiece.

If your budget is tight and you do NOT intend to go big on high end GPUs, but want to keep to midrange - upper mid (GTX x70 maximum, basically), then a slight premium for Gsync may not be too bad. You'll be running below 60 fps at times which is when it pays off for smoothness.

The other route, is to put the Gsync premium towards a bigger GPU which will make you break even today but makes a future GPU purchase more expensive, which is rewarded with more performance (and holding 60 fps) more easily.

Choices ;) I personally lean towards the stronger GPU option, especially if you prefer playing at high refresh rates and don't mind backing down to High settings. Above 100 FPS you have Nvidia Fast Sync, which comes free with the GPU and is MUCH more hassle-free ;) Screen tear also becomes a non-issue at high FPS.

One drawback of Gsync for example is that monitor strobe is not possible, and that is an awesome motion blur reduction feature. Also below 60 fps, Gsync adds a bit of input lag.

Main reason that PUBG is a bad benchmark is because its online so you don't have a fixed run.

Get 1440 monitor and dial down a bit, lets be honest we all keep our monitors longer than gpu.

I cant imagine gaming @144hz with a 970 would be very smooth. I have a 1200p monitor & @60hz it handles the work, but i wouldnt say theres a ton of headroom for more than double the refresh rate.unless ofc gsync somehow makes it doable

If it has G-sync and you dial back some settings it's going to be fine.

I wouldn't say get a 1440p to use with a gtx970 less he has plans to upgrade that in near future. I have a gtx1080 and at times it struggles to top 100fps in games on it. Even for 2 weeks i had to use my gtx980 due to 1 case of 1080 died and was in RMA, other was 1 or so month back when 1080's were hard to find it was tough on fps.

hence i said dial it down, tell me how often do you change monitor?
