Hi guys, first off my apologies if this is posted in the wrong area.

I'm wondering if I should sell my oculus rift and touch controllers and throw in like $400 And preorder the pimax 8k vr headset. Wondering if anyone else has done this or thought about doing It? Also does anybody know if a gtx 1080 would run it? I mean it's 8k but my friends old 2.8ghz Xeon with a gtx 950 runs my oculus rift with very little difference vs my gtx 1080.

Use scaling in Nvidia control panel and run games at 5k. See how that works and then think of 8k.

You can super scale the oculus rift?

I would put money on a more mature platform. VR as of right now is less about resolution of HMD, but the experience of the entire package: tracking, control, software support.

Keep the Rift. Wait 2 more gen for some accumulation of tech maturation.

No but if your rig can't do 5k normally why would it run 8k VR?

I think my GTX 1080 will be enough? Hopefully at least... if my friends gtx 950 can run my oculus rift without any issues (and it's below minimum spec) then I'd assume that a GTX 1080 would be able to run the pimax?

My problems with the Rift are mainly that it's hard to see things clearly, I mean turning on AA to the max helps a bit, but it only goes so far. Having a higher resolution display would be the fix that people have been wanting for VR headsets, wouldn't it? I mean I cannot tell you how many people complain about it being low res. It says that it works with the Vive lighthouses and that it uses Vive accessories, so does that mean it would be as mature a platform as the Vive in the sense that it's using the same equipment the vive does, just a much higher resolution display?

For useless games, for games like Project Cars 2 , you need much more...

If you have jacked up super sampling all the way up and still can't see things clearly in multiple games, I would recommend you check out your eye sight for possible short sights. Subtle myopia does result in blurry vision that are usually not noticeable in your daily life.

Also on the GPU, 1080Ti level performance is almost a must if you are going up in super sampling.

My vision is fine, other people in my family wear glasses and I have by far the best vision (22/20 I think). I don't mind turning down some settings but I think a 1080 ti is about 20-30% faster than a 1080 ti so I might need upgrade my gpu with the next gen of gpu (navi is supposedly coming out q3 2018?)

AMD GPUs are not good for VR. They only pay lip service for VR while providing next to nothing in terms of driver support. Stay with nVidia if you want to have good VR experience. Vega is a turd and Navi may very likely follow suit. Wait for the xx80Ti of Volta to upgrade.

Go to an eye doctor and check it out. If over 50% of your immediate family family need glasses it may be a significant enough.

I wear glasses all the time and I don't even need to turn up the super sampling to make my Vive experience crispy clear.

Good point with gpus, I think I'll stick with nvidia for vr. I heard something awhile ago saying Pascal was twice as good as maxwell at vr, is this true??

Also my vision is fine. I am not the only one I know who has problems with the low res vr headsets. I have a friend who complains about the same issue with his vive (he doesn't wear glasses or anything). It's just that these headsets are too low res, I cannot comfortably watch tv on them for example and sometimes reading text in a game is challenging. I can read 8 point font all day without issue so it's defiantly not my eyes but the headset which is why 8k with a 200 degree fov is so appealing.

You're missing my point. The difference between 4k and 5k is huge to the point where even two 1080tis struggle. 8k is like 16 4k monitors.

The VR headset is two 4k. One for each eye. The resolution of the oculus rift for each eye piece I believe is 1080x1200. I don't know how hard it will be to run, but if a gtx 1080 ti can run it then I'm fairly certain a gtx 1080 could as well. The gtx 1080 is still a fast card.

There can be a big difference between the two cards as there already is a big gap on paper. There are a lot of games where a Ti can run but a non-Ti can't at 4k.

EDIT: two 4k is not 8k. 5k has the pixels of four 4k so really it's a double 4k headset which for anything decent your 1080 won't power.
